On September 17, 2011, people from all across the United States of America and the world came to protest the blatant injustices of our times perpetuated by the economic and political elites. On the 17th we as individuals rose up against political disenfranchisement and social and economic injustice. We spoke out, resisted, and successfully occupied Wall Street. Today, we proudly remain in Liberty Square constituting ourselves as autonomous political beings engaged in non-violent civil disobedience and building solidarity based on mutual respect, acceptance, and love. It is from these reclaimed grounds that we say to all Americans and to the world, Enough! How many crises does it take? We are the 99% and we have moved to reclaim our mortgaged future. Through a direct democratic process, we have come together as individuals and crafted these principles of solidarity, which are points of unity that include but are not limited to:
Engaging in direct and transparent participatory democracy;
Exercising personal and collective responsibility;
Recognizing individuals’ inherent privilege and the influence it has on all interactions;
Empowering one another against all forms of oppression;
Redefining how labor is valued;
The sanctity of individual privacy;
The belief that education is human right; and
Making technologies, knowledge, and culture open to all to freely access, create, modify, and distribute. (amendment passed by consensus 2/9/2012)
We are daring to imagine a new socio-political and economic alternative that offers greater possibility of equality. We are consolidating the other proposed principles of solidarity, after which demands will follow.
On July 12th, participants in OccupyLA met to raise awareness for unlawful arrests of activists that had been targeting a lobby group with a stranglehold on power over local and state politics. The activists handed out chalk and shared the story of unlawful arrests and police repression.
After NATO we had some visitors from Occupy Chicago and Occupy Wall Street join us here in Los Angeles! They need supplies! We need prepackaged non perishables, bottled water, sleeping bags, tents, socks, hygene supplies, ect. I found out through a friend about some arrests up in Oakland I wasn't very familiar with. So tonight I looked up the charges and the case and was disgusted. Three of Occupy Oaklands occupiers were accused of theft, and jailed on $100,000 bond. One is still in and could not be bailed out. Oakland has started a letter wiring campaign to him to keep his spirits up, and I think it would be nice if we joined in.
People are often misled into believing that the Occupy Movement is merely a way to pass the time for the homeless, unemployed or lost souls of society. The mainstream media portrays occupiers as degenerates, anarchists and overall menaces to society and unfortunately, this is what is being fed to the general public.
It is the morning of the 58th day of Occupy Los Angeles. I am not physically at the occupation, but my heart still is. We were scheduled to go to a conference, which will lead to making a stronger network for all occupy cities. I know some people on the ground in Los Angeles are unhappy I left, not realizing I am of more use on the ground continuing to work and lend support, then I would be protesting and put in jail. I am currently waiting on the results of Councilman Rosenthals call for a temporary hold.
Last night, Occupy Los Angeles received an offer from the City of Los Angeles. Nothing has been submitted to us in writing (publicly), but to my understanding, the City of LA is offering 10,000 feet of underground office space for a $1 a year lease rate. They are also saying they will provide shelter for the homeless.
