At 4:30 am on December 27, 2012, over 200 members of “Law Enforcement”, including some 50 LA county sheriffs deputies, and more than 150LAPD officers descended on 14620 Leadwell St. in Van Nuys. They brought with them the implied violence of firearms, armored vehicles, tear gas, and full riot gear, all to throw one family out into the street and end the longest post-eviction foreclosure defense in California history.
That morning, on Sherman way and Van Nuys blvd., one block away from the Hernandez home, a homeless woman was set on fire at the bus bench that had been her spot for years. Even though 200 sworn officers were just down the block, a civilian had to chase down the attacker, and hold him for 30 minutes till the police arrived because the police were too busy with their eviction plan to make more people homeless.
In the San Fernando Valley neighborhood of Van Nuys in northeast Los Angeles, houseless people like JoJo have barricaded themselves for more than ninety days inside the property line of the home of Hernandez family, aspiring to the fabled “middle-class,” to prevent the family’s imminent foreclosure eviction.
VAN NUYS, CA, Oct 15—In what can only be understood as continued harassment on behalf of
banks and retaliation for resistance, LAPD cruisers and a Department of Sanitation truck lined the street outside the Hernandez family’s Van Nuys home this afternoon and declared that furniture and a temporary wooden barricade on the property are violations of city sidewalk ordinance 56.11. The Hernandez family, facing imminent foreclosure, currently have proceedings pending before the court for two earlier 56.11 citations, noting that there are no sidewalks in front of their home and no immediate threat to public health or safety. The Hernandez family has erected the ten-foot barricade in symbolic protest of their impending, fraudulent eviction by Bank of America with the help of neighbors, the Occupy Movement, and other grassroots groups.
