Fight for Districtwide Priority Enrollment at LACCD Board of Trustees' Meeting!

Description:

Show up to the LACCD Board of Trustees' Meeting and fight against the district faculty senate and senior administration officials' attempt to eliminate District Wide Priority Enrollment!

Simple directions are to take the Metro Red Line to the 7th St/Metro Center stop and the district office is just a 100 yard walk from the exit on 7th St. See below for the note from former LACCD Student Trustee Brandon Batham:

Hello All

If you read nothing else in this note, read this: The Los Angeles Community College District is attempting to change the way you are able to register for and be able to get your classes across the district!!!

If that got your attention, here's some specifics on the issue. If you don't need specifics, and would like to help us fight this move, skip this paragraph. Here are the specifics: recently, the student leaders in the LACCD voted down a proposal by the faculty-run Academic Senate that would move the current system of district-wide priority enrollment (this is your ability to register and get classes that you need to graduate or transfer at more than one college--ie, taking an English course at LA Valley College, and having the ability to get a Biology course at Pierce College as well). The system of district-wide enrollment priority would be replaced with one that gave students separate priority dates for each college they wanted classes in, making it even more difficult for students to graduate or transfer on time by getting the classes they need that some colleges offer and others don't. One of the top administrators for the District told me, when we met to see if we could find a compromise to our plans, told me to just assure the students and student leaders to "leave it alone and just let it happen." Not only did the student leaders involved vote against the proposal, we offered a counter-proposal that would keep district-wide priority enrollment during the Fall and Spring semesters (when most people are taking classes), but would allow the colleges who are able to offer a Summer or Winter session through proper fiscal management to give top priority to students enrolled at that specific college, followed by a district-wide priority.

So here's where you come in: over the course of the next month or two, the Board of Trustees will be meeting and coming to a decision by their meeting on July 11th. That gives us three meetings to attend and demand that the Board of Trustees vote down this proposal, because the district administrators and faculty senate have refused to listen to student input. Please commit to attending all of or as many as you can of the following Board of Trustees' meeting, and speaking during public comment time to express your disagreement with the change to enrollment priority: Wednesday, June 13 (3:30pm), Wednesday June 27 (3:30 pm) or Wednesday, July 11 (3:30 pm). We will not go quiet and let the district make decisions without student input and a fair, shared governance procedure. I hope you will join me at these meetings. Please comment with any questions or...well, comments.

Best,

Brandon Batham
