Ban Fracking Now protest

Description:

Dear California residents: Don't Let Our State Be Fracked! THIS WILL AFFECT YOU, your children, your property, and our beautiful state. We are calling on Governor Brown and members of the California Legislature to author a ban on fracking now. California needs to join Vermont, New York, New Jersey, France, Bulgaria and a host of local communities across the United States that have banned fracking. 50,000 Californians have already signed the petition. We need to show a growing movement - join us - lets build a future our children will be proud of!

What: Ban Fracking Now protest
When: Tuesday, June 12, 5:30 p.m. - 6:30 p.m.

After the protest, you will also be able to attend the only workshop taking place in the Los Angeles area to demand a ban on fracking in California starting at 7:00pm! The workshop will be held inside Culver City Hall and we need to make the case that a ban is the only way forward.

Come early for a potluck supper, starting at 5:00pm.

BACKGROUND:
The California Department of Conservation Division of Oil, Gas, and Geothermal Resources (DOGGR) is the state agency responsible for protecting Californians from the dangers of fracking, and they're dragging their feet. Even though fracking is already taking place all over the state, DOGGR is just starting to think about how to protect Californians from its harmful effects. On June 12, DOGGR is finally holding a workshop on how to "safely regulate" fracking in the Los Angeles area. Join us in telling them that regulations don't work — we need to ban fracking now!

Fracking is a dangerous method of extracting natural gas and oil. Millions of gallons of water, toxic chemicals, and sand are injected underground at extremely high pressures in order to release and extract oil or gas. Fracking has been compared to exploding a massive pipe bomb of toxic chemicals underground.

The inherent dangers of fracking have been demonstrated over and over by a series of fracking-related disasters across the country — from flammable tap water to major health issues, communities around the country have seen it all. To protect California's public health and the environment, the only viable solution is to ban fracking.

Join Food and Water Watch, Citizens Coalition for a Safe Community, Grassroots Coalition, Environment Now, Neighborhood Council for Baldwin Hills, and 50,000 Californians calling for a ban.
