Bike Solidarity Within the Occupy Los Angeles Movement

The Occupy movement in Los Angeles and the bicycle community are proving that the solidarity of the two is a great way to work together in providing a stronger occupation. At the occupation in LA there is a bike shop which provides basic to moderate bike repairs. The bike camp on the south lawn even received a donation of four bikes so far, these bikes are to be painted gold and used by the community as communal bikes for the residents of tent city at Occupy Los Angeles. Two of the bikes are brand new donations by Flying Pigeon, a local Los Angeles bike shop. To get a bike, all one must do is talk to Jose, who is moderating the usage of the communal bicycles.

Henry and others who live at the bike camp are now providing a courier and messenger service that is operated under the donation only principle. This will benefit the movement in many ways such as getting supplies, as well as addressing the need to spread information and all other needs that these services provide.

Aside from donating, there are other ways that the bike community can get involved. Occupy LA Bicycle Outreach & Action Day Ride will be leaving every Sunday at 12:00 p.m. and will ride throughout the LA area. The ride is at an easy pace and is an amazing way to provide public out-reach and promote bicycle consciousness. This action includeds handing out fliers, chanting, and stimulating dialogue. We rode for twenty miles on Sunday, Oct. 16, 2011. The ride left at 12:00 p.m. and returned around 7:30 p.m.

The bicycle community is an important and imperative function in the success of the movement. Bicycles provide self-sufficient, sustainable transportation, as well as self-reliance. If this movement is to be successful the need of self-reliance and fossil fuel independence is a must.
