I have some real concerns about a man named
Gwilyn McGrew (Twitter acct @GwilynMcGrew)
President McGrew & Associates, an investment firm
He was given the mic by a facilitator Friday night & allowed to speak & also spoke to members of the encampment afterwards. There is a YouTube video of the incident here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gr6di26NApU&feature=youtube_gdata_player This vid has been featured in at least two right wing blogs so far: http://biggovernment.com/adavid/2011/10/16/capitalist-confronts-occupyla/?utm_source=feedburner&utm_medium=feed&utm_campaign=Feed%3A+BigGovernment+%28Big+Government%29#idc-cover http://www.againstcronycapitalism.org/featured/crony-capitalism/capitalis-confronts-occupyla.html I'm not knocking free speech at all, but I'm concerned about Mr McGree widely republishing materials to the lunatic fringe via his Twitter account that in no way represent Occupy LA as a whole. Fanatics are easily riled & I don't want them showing up at the encampment to threaten the adults & children there with guns or something: "Look Who Leads Occupy LA - Nationwide Takeover Planned" http://trevorloudon.com/2011/10/communists-lead-occupy-los-angeles-movement-nationwide-takeover-planned/ (sample reply to this post "long past time to send in the Army and wipe the terrorists off the park") "Occupy LA Protester Says Zionist Jews Who Run Banks Should Be Run Out of This Country" http://biggovernment.com/reasontv/2011/10/15/occupyla-protester-zionist-jews-who-run-banks-should-be-run-out-of-this-country/?utm_source=feedburner&utm_medium=feed&utm_campaign=Feed%3A+BigGovernment+%28Big+Government%29 I only knew about this b/c Mr. McGrew tweeted the link to me (& about a zillion other people). Please check his Tweets & Replies. McGrew must be held accountable for any hate he stirs up. I don't mean to sound alarmist, but McGrew is not just some cuddly 1% teddy bear who Occupy LA can adopt as a mascot. Please be alert & stay safe. I love you all. Thanks so much.

In principle, you're right

In principle, you're right that there will be James O'Queef style trickery at play, and there's plenty to work with, either by speaking to the fringe, through contrived scenarios, or outright deceptive editing. I fell for it, but I'm not concerned about it. The people who don't understand decentralized movements weren't on the fence; they were ossified conservative ballast to begin with. We don't have time for their crap. Our concern is hitting the 1% back, shaming them through our own media channels, relentlessly exposing them for the parasitic frauds they are.
What should be of concern, IMO, is the dramatic arcs the mainstream media constantly seeks. Their positive editorializing will eventually reach its crescendo, and they will turn against us by latching onto some overblown scandal they can mill into two weeks of distraction, until Lindsey Lohan flips her car on Roxbury, or our dumbass administration starts kicking up dust in Iran.
My belief is coherent messages and directed actions are our next objective.
Also, I say we write and speak under the assumption everything is bugged, and someone in the room is a hostile agent. I don't mean behave with paranoia, but just minimize what you give them to work with, and get everyone on the same page so if they try to bring any surprises it'll be squarely on them. The final reason is to get used to it. There is no reason to care about that. The have the media and our politicians in their pockets, can influence the spin of most things, manufacture stories, etc. That's why we're out there in the first place.

Thanks Mike for your clear thinking.

I just don't want OLA to embrace McGrew and give him a platform to manufacture vileness to spread around to the lunitic fringe. We cannot control fanatics, but we can avoid unintentionaly enabling them.
My kids are in the encampment. I'm a mom, I worry.
Thx again.

McGrew is uninformed

As you are a seeming fan of his, perhaps you could explain the payroll tax income cap to McGrew and also inform him that the poor, even the out-of-work poor, do pay taxes. That would be a start on just two of the subjects he demonstated no understanding of.
Thank you for your input.
You're right we fell for it,

You're right we fell for it, but I disagree that the people involved (myself included) didn't stand for anything. I think it was those with the most blinding convictions that were genuinely curious how a typical despicable, old, fat, rich white guy would answer challenging questions.
Unfortunately, the answer was in soundbites, and while carefully controlling the mic to avoid any follow-up questions. The most rudimentary line of Socratic reasoning would've cornered this smirking twit -- which is why he clung to the mic for dear life.
We were oblivious, vulnerable to novelty and the possibility of debate (which "Martin," as he called himself, avoided at all costs). As people genuinely interested in the world and those around us, we thought there'd be something to be learned, or surprising about a new perspective. But true to form he was a fraud trying to further an ideological agenda so fragile and wrong he had to spare it any rebuttal. In that sense, he was consistent in representing his alleged class.
But I have to reiterate: Consider the type of person who would give credence to this low-rent David Koch. That's the question that matters -- did we lose the esteem of anyone worth caring about. It's very unlikely to me their opinion could be swayed by viewing a real debate or hearing well-documented facts. Rather, they're looking for confirmation of their existing provincial worldview. They listen to talk radio and shouting pundits that blame Mexicans for disappearing jobs, blame college students with loan debt for "living beyond their means," and generally assure them they're right and everyone else is stupid -- so they should just do what the amoral, rich old farts tell them, rack up another credit card bill, and everything'll be cool.
I'm a little embarrassed, but honestly, we have bigger fish to fry.

Looking at the Breitbart link
Submitted by cryptomnesiac on
Looking at the Breitbart link, you can even see they claim that OLA people were chanting "9-9-9." That's a total fabrication, and one of those things we can do little about, since it wasn't even dependent on tricking an actual demonstrator. I could bring some actor to CH, have him or her say something weird/dumb, film it, and brag about discrediting something or another.
The one chanting was actually this younger fat guy with crossed eyes (you can tell it's him by the ear-splitting distortion from his being inches away from the camera's mic), in a shirt with some childish design on it. I had the impression he was doing some kind of derogatory "retarded" schtick. He appeared and disappeared with the amoral old guy, along with the guy with the PA, and one or two other cameramen.
My point is this is easy to pull off. It'll happen, or it'll be attempted anyway, repeatedly over the course of this thing. Breitbart, O'Queef in NY, et al, have nothing better to do, and someone is paying them to try to fuck with things however they can because powerful people are worried. But the truth is this really is random people migrating around an idea, not something that can be dispatched as easily as an obscure government program to help poor people. Our job isn't to put out these metaphorical fires started by the sub-journalistic and attention-starved, but to give their bosses more to worry about. We do that by brushing off the bullshit, and organizing more actions.
I don't know if anyone else was involved in Anonymous when it started doing its first physical protests, but there were very similar situations. The Church of Scientology hired PIs to follow protesters home, park on their streets, try to intimidate them. There were a ton of infiltrators posing as protesters. They even "exposed" some of the original Anonymous people from the 4chan boards where the whole thing started, following them with signs ID'ing them.
But it was like, what about it?
There was nothing to discredit. Everyone appeared on the own accord, with nothing to go by but a time and place. In response, some Anon protesters made signs with arrows pointing down at the infiltrators.
The people who got screwed by the whole thing were the actual hackers who broke the law, and got traced to the defaced sites and DoS attacks.
I hope some of this makes sense. I'm kinda tired.

Not to worry Mike, you make an abundance of sense.
Thanks again.
Yeah with you on this one
Submitted by Fex on
Exactly, it can be brushed off.
Though I would like to point out as far as someone like that getting access to the public mic and holding onto to it to avoid serious questioning/discussion etc etc . . . next time someone could simply do a "Mic check!" and the crowd's voices can be used to get questions heard. The PA system's nice, but if something like that happens again there's always a human mic on hand ;)

Using the People's Mic is an
Submitted by cryptomnesiac on
Using the People's Mic is an excellent idea if the situation occurs again. Having control over the platform of communication was the only thing that fool had going for him. We should also film the weirdos filming us, and put up videos explaining how these people just wafted in for the stunt, and weren't real participants. It'd also show that it was one of those jackasses that was chanting, and no one in OLA.
