We were told ANY $$$ SELLING not allowed at OLA

someone needs to verify, clarify that rules are as stated =we heard at GA by an organizer more than 1x that NO SELLING was happening at OLA, because it would 'shut us down"....so if someone else is selling INSIDE the occupied area and they are NOT occupiers in movement, just making money on the crowd, what happens to our guidelines/rules? ...let's not get goo goo eyed about every person around....yes the vendors are in 99%...but they are not there for same purpose as 'occupiers' are in movement ... just ask them if you dare...so allowing & agreeing with anything and everything makes for more chaos, dis-organizations, dilution and loss of what has been so diligently worked upon for 17 days now...let's GET REAL and not just idealistic, please. ...Please…confirm and find out and tell everyone the same set of guidelines/ rules and not everyone make up their own allowances or act as-if-they-can-say what Is or what is Not best practices here....we’ve been here since day 1 and noticing what is happening and how we progress, regress and still work to make this happen !

Is this what we are being reduced to?

Those push cart vendors are opportunist who don't care what the movement is all about, they should not be allowed to profit from the movement.

WTF??? Stay focused attach yourself to the reason why we are doing this, detach yourself from the little thing's that distract you from why you are where you are.

Get focused & stay on task.

whose task are we talking about here ?

"Get focused & stay on task."

that must mean, the task is to stay on site in movement w/o being derailed by those who are more involved in their earnings than in what OLA is doing on site. Vendors come to where crowds gather to sell. Their task is different and seems to interfere with what allows OLA to remain at City Hall and FEED OUR FOLK FREELY. What task do you have in mind in relation to This Issue, not divergent ones ?

political party

This movement will not affect change unless it becomes a political party--now is the time for a third party in this country.  If we don't, we will be stuck for four more years with Barack Obama or Herman Cain.  Herman can is a capitalist beast, he sat on the board of the federal reserve!  And he already showed in his comments that he hates this movement.

Again I say ..."WTF"?

This is not the original agenda of OWS, or why I am passionately apart of "Occupy, & The 99%". A third party is a distraction to what we all came together for, and is an unrealistic goal that will compromise & destroy the fabric of The 99% and the simple & non complexed yet difficult goal of change to our current system. I do not want to contribute another layer of deceit by introducing another party of "Good Intentioned" politicians. Your playing right into the 1% hands by doing this & in the course, shattering a Solidarity based revolution, who a lot of us are not looking for another party to join, but to combat those already in position by showing our collective Disgust in the "Status Quo".

If you want to pin the hopes of any Occupy & The 99% accomplishment's to change by creating a third party, you pin them to immediate failure in hopes that in time things may get better. Are you kidding me, are you crazy, are you planning on running in this new party? Can't you third party fans start your own movement, but stay with the 99% and just focus on the corruption of the 1% and making changes that could be implemented in our life time?

Again I say WTF?????

agreed ...keep OUTSIDE vendors out of the tented block..but....

who has the bold courage to tell them to MOVE elsewhere ? if they are lookin brown, po', are workers, more sympathy prevails and cheap hunger adds to negligence.... thus protection of OLA continuing fails and health dept agreements are broken.....WHO takes responsibility and repeatedly, for that is what it takes, and tells OUTSIDE vendors that they are endangering the encampment/ movement ?.....

how much other flack will that daring person get from surrounding crowd to not deny anyone entry 'because they are 99% workers too"...can the security/ peacekeepers be given this task too ?

who else is 'entitled' to say what can or not happen on site? very tricky situation...and if YOU know how to have rules/guidelines enforced without an ugly crowd/mob reaction, please let us all know also at other forums and places on this website. thanx

1. The vendors are not OLA.

1. The vendors are not OLA.

2. If someone gets sick from eating a vendor's weenie, argue that it's their own fault.

If someone walked off-site and got lunch, and got sick on-site, would OLA's food tent get shut down?  No.  It was off-site food.  Same should go for hot dog vendors, who, as you all probably know, are totally unlicensed.

These vendors are part of Downtown LA's fabric, even if they are unlicensed.  When in Rome, etc.  Don't be little bureaucratic bosses.

O.L.A.: don't take on function of police to harrass food vendors

There actually have been political struggles in Los Angeles against the harrassment of food vendors, who are not just part of the 99% but really working class people. O.L.A. needs to refuse to take on police functions. I really want this movement to succeed, but it doesn't have to succeed necessarily by staying indefinitely on the City Hall lawn at any cost. I see it gradually getting subverted, becoming a movement not of resistance but of complicity.

Leone

super disappointed.

I saw this article being circulated on fb and thought it was a joke.  I didn't want to believe that a so-called peoples movement would be capable of demonstrating such malice for other human beings.  The child in the article is 15 years old.  You all brought a 15 yo child to tears and still dare to call her breakdown a tactic to bring about sympathy.  Do you really think that this child wants to spend her weekends/days selling water bottles to a bunch of overpriviledged, pretentious hipsters? My guess is no.

I hope you all understand that these people selling hot dogs, popsicles, water bottles, etc are out there trying to make a living to pay rent and feed their families.  They are not opportunist trying to make a quick buck.  They are trying to make a living and survive in an unforgiving economy.  These individuals fill their carts everyday and take to the streets.  They risk harrasment by police, confiscation of their merchandise, being robbed, and now they have to be afraid of ya'll too.

I understand its easy to pick a fight with a 15yo child, but why not find your vertebrae and pick a fight with the people who are really fucking you over....LAC Health Dept.  Try pushing back before you comply to their every request.

I agree with Lee & Chamaka

They are part of us The 99%, give them a break, I'm sure their not subversives working incognito for the 1%. Compassion not hate.

SHAME ON OLA "MANAGEMENT"

I can’t believe how low you have stood; you have truly shown how much of a bunch of hypocrites OLA management really is.

To yell and make a 15 year old cry because she is trying to help her parents in this broken economy and call her an opportunist demonstrate how little you really care about the 99%. You should be furious that a kid needs to sell “hotdogs” and “burritos” to survive a meager life. She truly is a 99%er. Can’t believe all this just because the people in charge are afraid of a fine that they cant very easily fight and win proving the food venders are not associated with OLA officials. I question you ability to effectively organize and defend your movement legally.

For OLA management to side with authorities instead of protecting one of our own is shameful. I understand that there are issues with sanitation, however, that is not for OLA management to be concerned with but the public health authorities.  I see OLA Security functioning as an oppressive force mirroring the same force they claim to be protesting.

Also, why is OLA management trying to dictate what we eat or who we buy food from? You have no say if we step out of the camp and eat elsewhere in Downtown or if we decide to give our business to food venders (taking our risk of an illness as we would eating at any restaurant).

Remember people and you too, OLA management hypocrites, City Hall and its immediate facility is public property. Food venders, who are part of the 99% and are trying to make a living, have as much right to be there as we do. Please let the county health officials do their job and do not do it for them making you agents of the oppressive system you claim to be protesting.

DO NOT MAKE LITTLE GIRLS CRY.

Fear mongering. Great tactic.

Does this make me an asshole for stepping up with Security, to protect the Occupation from Agent Provocateurs?  The vendors MAY be 99%ers but they BECAME Agent Provocateurs when they would not cooperate by doing business on a corner or across the street.

Your inability to reflect and accept another persons point of view is frightening.  Even more alarming, is the ease with which you accuse individuals of being agent provocateurs. What kind of witch hunt are you trying to start up here? So anyone who does not comply with Security's orders is suspect? Anyone who questions decisions/actions made by security is up for scrutiny? And you Larry, are here to protect the movement from all the big bad opportunists who use their childrens' crocodile tears to gain sympathy.  Its amazing how a title and a little authority can really mess with an individual's integrity.

Btw, I am also a new online member.  I registered to comment specifically on this issue.  However, should I tell you of the many nights I've marched, camped out, lounged out in order to validify my voice? The revolution is happening outside of the comfort of your computer screen.  You have no right to question the commitment of others solely because you do not agree with thier point of view.

Occupier-Of The Food Tent,

Occupier-Of The Food Tent,  Michelle, that The LA County health food tent permit process designates all the areas occupied (lawns) and adjacent sidewalks as the areas OLA is responsible for maintaining food safety regulations (if the food tent is to stay in business).

Our food tent is only responsible for the food it prepares & serves from the tent, even if we supplied the vendors food, once it enters the cart it's the cart permittee responsibility to maintain food safety standards, based on their permit type.

Larry

You are right. I was not present at the time of the incident, but the FACTS that I did get were straight from your website and pictures (which by the way is floating around fb). My reaction is in response to the FACTS that you yourself presented.  I stand by what I have said, I feel that by pushing the vendors out you'all misdirecting your energies and wasting away the fight you should be giving the city.  As for the rest of your self-righteous rant, I'm not going to humor you with a response. Thank you for the opportunity for open and honest dialogue.

The facts are we have had

The facts are we have had many different reactions from the health department, and have been trying to comply with the city as they have so graciously worked with us. Occupy LA was cited holding us responsible for the vendors at one time. Not having food here has been really tough on those of us who actually LIVE here, or are occupying full time.People who visit from the outside have a hard time understanding we cannot work if we are not eating, and there are a lot of us actually working.

Michelle is one hell of a woman and has been super strong through all of this, I hope everyone gets behind her, and realizes she has really put herself on the line for us to have food here. If anyone is servsafe certified in california please contact us to see how you can volunteer! We need cooks, servers, organizers, and security!

My words represent myself and not Occupy Los Angeles. @lizsavage on Twitter

Is the food served Free

Is the food tent food free or are we charging money instead of asking donation's. Are people being paid for their services or is it all donated time?
