Democracy is not easy. It requires work and dedication. Most Americans believe that America is on the wrong track, and, for the most part, our representatives have not been representing us. Dissatisfied Americans might also agree that voting is not enough action to break out of this profound cycle of injustice and world-wide destruction. We the People are to blame for this mess: we have become utterly dependent on corporations and government for food, water and energy, and information. We have been giving away our representation to people who do not deserve it, we have been delegating responsibility to those who are not responsible, and we have been suspending disbelief for the words of those who are paid to speak, paid to feed us lie after lie after lie.
Once a politician is elected, he must be constantly babysat to make sure he is doing what we hired him to do. In some cases, only certain people have access to that politician, as is the case with our Federal Government. Those people with access to the President do not have the interests of average person in mind. President Obama himself admitted his limited power when he said, on his first week in office, that a social movement would be necessary for there to be any change. Change won't come unless people demand it. That is why we are here.
Our General Assembly is a forum for citizens' demands and citizens' action. Everybody here is learning how to govern themselves, and the governing body that We the People create has every bit as much legitimacy as elected officials in the executive, legislative, and judicial branches of the government--many who have not doing their jobs, but instead have been supporting flat-out robbery of the American People and the rest of the world. It is the "elephant in the room". Everybody in government is well aware that corporations have utterly taken control, but nobody wants to say anything about it for fear losing party sponsorship.
Our general assemblies are Free. Free as in Freedom, free as in Free Food. You can have your voice heard and participate in decision making, no matter if you're rich or poor, no matter what language you speak, no matter what race or religon you are.
That is real democracy; everything else is watered-down freedom product, which goes unchecked and leads to fascism. This is why it is so important for people to assemble and make decisions together. Everybody deserves the microphone. Everybody deserves an equal say. We are all branches of government.
We Demand Peace. We Demand Freedom. We want to stop bombing our brothers and sisters who live outside our borders. We are tired of borders. We grow weary of the distinctions between Citizen and Officer, between Alien and Citizen, between "Liberal" and "Conservative". We do not need political parties. We need to represent ourselves. We need to represent ourselves at Peoples' Assemblies in neighbordhoods across the country, and we need to enter the halls of power and make our voice heard. That is what We the People are doing here.
Under the Electoral College system, your vote does not have as much power as it would under a Direct Democracy. Direct Democracy is what We The People are doing here.
Hiring politicians to decide policy only provides an opportunity for lies, deception, and personality cults. The People should decide policy, openly and publicly. That is what We the People are doing here.
Our current Mass Media will protect its investors. Those investors are opposed to freedom and human sovereignty. Those investors benefit from our War Economy. In case you haven't noticed, those investors are doing everything they can to acquire ownership of you. We are creating a new mass media with cardboard, smartphones, cameras, and our very bodies. That is what We the People are doing here.
...and it's working.
Have a Peoples' Assembly in your neighborhood. Share. Govern yourself. Get Noticed. Make Resolutions. Share them with other governing bodies. People will take you seriously, so have fun.
Why We Are Here.

I'm sorry my children!
Submitted by slick7533 on
I'm sorry my children. Before you were born I marched in the street and felt the sting of tear gas because my country was killing peasants in SE Asia and soldiers came home with their heads sooo screwed up.
Then I got busy living my life assuming our country was headed forward. Boy, was I wrong. The activism of the 70's became the disco 80's where glitz and wealth was worshipped. The 90's gave us Slick Willy who did a few good things but he caved on financial deregulation and that has led us to where we are now. Sure, Bush is and was an idiot coached by warmongers who drove us deep into debt and even deeper into the collective disrespect of just about every other country on the planet. But the real damage was done when these financial companies were allowed to invent artificial investment products with no value that were leveraged in geometric progressions - with brokers and dealers and inside traders skimming off billions.
And this says nothing about the absurdly exorbitant salaries and bonuses paid out to those whose occupation is to rape the rest of us.
For me....no longer young...except at heart, it is time to rebel, to rise up, to raise awareness. It is time for demonstration again...and civil disobedience if necessary. It is our right. It is our responsibility.
Ignorance is the strongest tool the opposition has. This is what we must defeat. It will take a long time, it will try our patience. But we must continue.
See you at City Hall tomorrow
Yes. My father (an attorney)
Submitted by Laura on
Yes. My father (an attorney) was disappointed in my eldest siblings who thought they "won" and stopped after 18 year olds got the right to vote (but not drink or gamble) and withdrawals began from Vietnam. I was too young to attend rallys back then. He thought Nader "sold out" to corporate interests by accepting editor in chief of a new magazine (Consumer Reports), although later in business law I still admired Nader's early efforts to rein corporations in with legislation. For his approval(?), I never stopped being an activist and was disappointed how everyone else in the 80's and 90's thought everything was OK corrupt, yes, but OK "what can you do?". Got pictures of me with various signs (that also show my kids growing up), with petitions in front of grocuries, speaking at City Council meetings, School Boards, County Council Meetings...
But, to the quick. I campaigned for Line Item Veto. It was the easiest petition, cause, I have ever supported. Democrats, Republicans, non-partisans, ALL WERE FOR IT! I collected over 2500 signatures in ONE weekend! Never had such quick, full support of any cause! Yet, it failed by people's vote? Then, I look at a few of the last major elections. I.E. MJ not legal in CA was close, 51% to 49%, announced the next morning, never updated or changed. Yet, a prominent State position, also close, was not "finalized" for two weeks?! My son moved out of state over 6 years ago, yet they still will not take his name off voter (and thus jury duty), as they say "he is still voting every election"? Is that the reason for the new Repub laws making it difficult for college students to get registered in the state they are at school in? Because, instead of dead people votes, they are falsifying live people's votes? The two party system of monitoring and controlling elections has to stop. All positions in collecting and counting votes should be like Jury Duty, a lottery, with each assigned position in the process based on education level. No party considered, pure random chance. No serving more than once in 10 years. And no firing from jobs and paid at the rate of current workers (none of this citizen's time only worth $10/day).
A voting system set up this way would encourage patriotism for all areas of U.S. citizens, and get all more involved and informed.

I see too many comments and posts over on the occupywallst.org site that are obvious trollish satires. Posters pretending to be moron conservatives, in an effort to display the profound dunderheadedness of the right-wingers. Example: repeated mis-spellings and mistakes in grammar, even after being corrected. We get it. Conservatives are often narrow minded, not very bright, easily manipulated, many that are racists and bigots.
IF the ones doing this posting are indeed true conservative trolls, then they should be treated in the same way as anyone carrying a sign with an offensive message at an occupation.
If it is a charade intending to spoof the clownishness and limited thinking of the opposition, THEN STOP WASTING OUR TIME ! We do not need a demonstration , or convincing of this.
Democracy is not a joke. False antagonists are as unwanted as agent provocateurs.

Conservatives and Liberals Unite
Submitted by daniil on
Conservatives and liberals may not agree on we want the government to do. But we can still acknowledge each other as neighbors and take what power we have to build the community we want to live in. Human Compassion. Right relation to each other and to the land. Legislation (such as ALEC) is being discussed behind closed doors between corporate and party leadership to eliminate the rights of individuals.
Peoples assemblies DO make a difference for the sheer fact that people are paying atten tion: city officials, governors, businessmen, media moguls, and ordinary folks like you and me.
Substituting "We" For "Me" --The New Great Society
Submitted by GauriGirl on
We once were the Great Society. We cared about the widow down the street who needed assistance to feed her children. We cared about the elderly man who could not afford to see the doctor. Out of this caring came action that resulted in programs like Social Security, Medicare, etc. Programs for people, not for profit.
This caring was reflected even in the political process and financial institutions. Maybe there never was a real bank like Bailey Building and Loan ("It's A Wonderful Life") but that idealized image was based in some reality.
We were once the Great Society.
Then, somewhere along the way, caring gave way to greed and consumerism and "we" was lost to "me, me, me." This was, and is, only to the great advantage of the big multi-nationals. Because when we are each alone, we are so much easier to manipulate, control...and subjugate.
Now we have started to remember that "we" are the 99%. Now we have again begun to care. This is the first wonderful step toward taking back our power and starting our journey to a new Great Society.
Total Agreement
Submitted by old guy 57 on
I believe you have expressed the root of our problem and solution simply, clearly, and accurately. Over the past few decades we have allowed ourselves to be separated and defeated. Far too much importance is placed on individual material gain and comfort. It's as if most of us have forgotten what it is to be a member of society. We do owe it to our brothers and sisters to help them, care for them, and give them comfort. It is the ability to care for one another that separates us from the rest of the animals.
I have great hope that this can be a new awakening. Corporate entities can only take advantage of us if we allow them to. If we stand firm in our values and act in accordance with those beliefs, we will exact change.

Repeal SBX211
Submitted by dan cooper on
IF GOVERNMENT WOULD STAND BY THE CONSTITUTION THEN WE WOULDN’T BE IN THIS MESS, BUT INSTEAD THEY TAKE BRIBES / CAMPAIGN CONTRIBUTIONS AND THEY EITHER GIVE HUGE BAILOUTS OR THEY GRANT RETRO ACTIVE IMMUNITY FROM PROSECUTION,
HISTORY OF RETRO ACTIVE IMMUNITY IN THE UNITED STATES
1. given for unconstitutional use of torture
2. given for illegal merger of banks (we can see the effects of that now)
3. given to telecom company for illegal wire taps. (Fisa bill that led to the patriot act)
4. given to Judges for taking bribes. (SBX211)
SBX211 Retro Active Immunity given to California judges for openly taking bribes. Judges are employees of the state they receive their pay and benefits from the state. The Los Angeles Superior court judges are currently receiving an additional $57.688,00 from the county of Los Angeles. there is no bigger user of the court than L.A. County.(A party to the case and has a financial interest in most cases in the courts) Those payments were found to be unconstitutional / illegal in Sturgeon vs L.A. County. After that decision the judges paid a lobbyist to pass SBX211 ( RETRO ACTIVE IMMUNITY )
SBX211 does not restore due process
SBX211 violates Article 1 section 9
SBX211 violates the 14th amendment (no equal protections)
SBX211 violate checks and balances between legislative and Judicial powers.
Judges do not disclose the county payments at the onset of any trial where the county is either a party to the case or has a financial interest. (Judges violate Judicial codes of ethics)
Judges refuse to recuse themselves when requested under CCP170
Judges find themselves unbiased and then file an order striking statement.
In the year of 2010 alone $57,688.00 per year per judge X 460 judges = $26,709,544.00 paid to judges from L.A. County from tax payer money to only have the judges rule against the tax payer in favor of L.A. County or the County's interest. THE BRIBES WORK. Not only do judges get paid a state salary of $178,789.00 a year with medical and retirement benefits up to 75% of their salary, with the county payments the Los Angeles Superior court judges are the highest paid judges in the nation.
SBX211 is evidence of conspiracy of the California legislative branch of government to cover up the multiple felony's committed by the Judicial branch of government. By an act of Legislation, California's judicial branch has admitted to be corrupt.
SECTION FROM SBX211
This bill would provide that no governmental entity, or officer or employee of a governmental entity, shall incur any liability or be subject to prosecution or disciplinary action because of benefits provided to a judge under the official action of a governmental entity prior to the effective date of this bill on the ground that those benefits were not authorized under law.
