From iNewp.com...
What is ACTA?
ACTA is the Anti-Counterfeiting Trade Agreement. A new intellectual property enforcement treaty being negotiated by the United States, the European Community, Switzerland, Japan, Australia, the Republic of Korea, New Zealand, Mexico, Jordan, Morocco, Singapore, the United Arab Emirates, and Canada.
Why should you care about ACTA?
Initial reports indicate that the treaty will have a very broad scope and will involve new tools targeting "Internet distribution and information technology."
What is the goal of ACTA?
Reportedly the goal is to create new legal standards of intellectual property enforcement, as well as increased international cooperation, an example of which would be an increase in information sharing between signatory countries' law enforcement agencies.

They're pushing hard. A few other pieces of legislation
Submitted by Fex on
With all the crackdown internet legislation I think it's more that market forces that want everything their way and refuse to die and admit they're either outdated, detrimental, or both (big oil for instance) are at work. Teamed up with other market forces who are simply in it to lock in their corner of profits. Both types see the internet as a possible direct loss of profit (entertainment industry) or a loss of profit and possibly death of their industries due to the simple power of a knowledgeable populace which the internet allows. These days, politics/governments and markets aren't separate and enjoy controlling each other along with the rest of us for cash.
So to some companies and industries they gotta push hard, 'cause they see their time as limited. THEY'RE AFRAID for their own skins, and of us.
Multiple internet limiting and/or surveillance legislation is being attempted to be made law.
ACTA as mentioned here.
SOPA and PIPA which have garnered tons of attention lately.
Less well known are:
OPEN ( Online Protection and Enforcement of Digital Trade Act ) :

Another trade agreement restricting our rights under the auspices of intellectual property rights enforcement, TPPA ( Trans-Pacific Partnership Agreement ):

There's also The Protecting Children From Internet Pornographers Act Of 2011 which sounds good going by the title, but it mandates "the firm that sells you internet access would be required to track all of your Internet activity and save it for 18 months, along with your name, the address where you live, your bank account numbers, your credit card numbers, and IP addresses you’ve been assigned" and would require that info to be passed on to the Gov pretty much whenever it asks. Basically allowing total net surveillance in the name of "safety." This act has passed through commitee but as of yet has not been submitted to the floors of Congress or the Senate.
