Re: Resolution in SUPPORT of the Peaceful Occupy Los Angeles Protests to be heard on Tuesday, October 11, during the 10 AM Council meeting
Occupy Los Angeles Protestors:
For far too long the American public has been silent while many financial institutions and large corporations remain unaccountable for their actions. Like you, I believe that we must take drastic, bold measures to take our country back.
Attached is a Resolution that I have introduced this morning with Councilmember Bill Rosendahl and seconded by Council President Eric Garcetti and Councilmembers Jose Huizar, Ed Reyes, Paul Koretz and Dennis Zine. This resolution supports the goals of Occupy LA and the need for responsible banking reform.
The resolution has been referred to my Committee, Intergovernmental Relations, but I am waiving the resolution so it can go straight to the City Council. The resolution in SUPPORT of Occupy LA is expected to be heard by the Los Angeles City Council on Tuesday, October 11th during the 10:00 AM City Council meeting.
I encourage members of Occupy LA to attend this meeting and speak in support of this Resolution.
If you have questions regarding the meeting or the resolution, please contact Sarah Brennan on my staff at 213-473-7007 or via email at sarah.brennan@lacity.org

Re: Recommendation to Issue an Executive Order Allowing the “Occupy Los Angeles” Protestors to Remain on the City Hall Lawn After 10:30 PM as a Matter of Public Safety
Mayor Villaraigosa:
I’m writing ot urge you to issue an Executive Order that will allow “Occupy Los Angeles” to remain on the City Hall lawn overnight from here on forth.
As you know, several hundred Angelenos have been engaging in a peaceful demonstration by City hall called “Occupy Los Angeles” since Saturday, October 1st.
Both “Occupy Los Angeles” and our City Deparments—in particular, the Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) and the General Services Deparment Police—are to be commended for working together and for the safe and orderly conduct of the protest thus far.
Currently, since the City Hall lawn is a public park and “Occupy Los Angeles” does not have a permit to stay there past closing hours, each night “Occupy Los Angeles” protestors have moved their tents and belongings to the sidewalk, where they sleep. I believe this poses a public safety issue. With increasing numbers of protestors sleeping just several feet away from the curb of major thoroughfares in Los Angeles, the City is inadvertently contributing to a potential major public safety issue, should a vehicle swerve off the road.
I urge you to issue an Executive Order and make any necessary accomodations that will allow “Occupy Los Angeles” protestors to sleep on the City Hall lawn, avoiding safety issues while the protest continues.
Thank you for your consideration and I look forward to hearing your response.
