Occupy LA press release -- October 7th, Dr. Cornel West visited the Occupy Los Angeles encampment now referred to by occupiers as "tent city”. Dr. West is to return tonight at 5pm to speak to the occupiers. He will be accompanied by Tavis Smiley.

"1% of the population controls 42% of the wealth. Something is wrong in America." Dr. West says, explaining the growing gap in the economic structure.

As for why so many people are attracted to a movement such as this he says, "People are morally outraged at the feudal mentality. It's just not right that 42% of our precious children, children of all different colors are living near or below the poverty level."

“The strength of the 99% is that everyone is affected,” he continued, "We are all colors, cultures, religions -atheistic and agnostic- we are all classes, civilizations, we are all genders and sexual orientations. Why? Because we believe that justice is something bigger than every one of us."

Los Angeles Occupiers have many different voices and opinions, the most common is that they stand in solidarity with the Occupy Wall Street group at Liberty Park and agree with them that corporate greed and corruption in politics must be stopped. The Los Angeles occupation officially began on October 1st after a week long of organizing and general assemblies. October 8th, 2011 marks the one week anniversary of the occupation, a festival is planned with music, workshops and teach-ins at the South Lawn of City Hall located at 200 N. Spring St. Los Angeles.

???????

Both of these guys are immeressed in the status quo it is crazy how this movement has been sucking up to their enemy. Both of these guys work for Wall St scum. Both of them are trying to keep you from discovering the truth. Neither wants to end the FED banks.

What is wrong with you people?

Hate Won't Work

Hi Scott Mollett:

It's a shame you missed Dr. West.  The part where he talked about a movement of love vs. a mob of hate is quite relevant here.  I thought we were looking to change policies, not brand people.

I also wasn't aware that ending the Federal Reserve entirely was part of the agenda.  I kind of like the part where government has a hand in regulating the supply of money.  I just want it to be done better.

Bottom line is, if you start taking this tack -- alienating our allies and marginalizing our views -- you will hurt the movement and work against the very change you purport to desire.

Sincerely,

Scott Miller

What degree of agreement is required?

While I certainly agree that Tavis S is no revolutionary meanimg for the overthrow of the state, neither are a majority of the folk who support occupy LA or NY for that matter. But he and Dr West support the idea that only a mass activated mullti racial movement opposed to the neoliberal policies of the day has any chance of creating the conditions for fundamental change. No they may not be heroes, but to suggest that they are complicit with current policies and practices of the mean spirited corporate control of the government, is just plain incorrect.
