Occupy Portland and the Portland Action Lab <http://www.portlandactionlab.org> are leading a national call to action uniting diverse social and environmental movements to take a stand against corporate dominance. On February 29^th Portland will join cities across the country to Shut Down the Corporations <http://www.shutdownthecorporations.org> using their wealth to influence legislation and our democracy.
Our target for this date is the American Legislative Exchange Council or ALEC, is the poster child of the co-opting of our nation. The anti-union bills which caused massive protests in Wisconsin were written by ALEC, as was the anti-immigrant SB1070 passed in Arizona. ALEC corporations do business in every state and nearly every city in the United States. To see what bills, corporations and politicians are engaged in this type of anti-democratic work, go to www.ALECexposed.org <http://www.ALECexposed.org>.
Portland Action Lab, the group that organized the November 17^th Occupy the Banks Day of Action <http://n17pdx.org/>, operates on a spokes council model. Small groups focusing on specific tasks (outreach, media, logistics, training, process, etc) meet outside of and during F29 planning sessions and report back to the group with updates and questions.
We invite you as an individual or as a representative of your organization to join the Shut Down the Corporations spokes council. Please join one of the existing spokes or come as an affinity group wanting to take action to Shut Down the Corporations on February 29^th .
This is a national call to action brought forth by Occupy Portland. We need your help to reach Occupy Movements and other like minded organizations across the nation.
