This is a reply to a comment in the Outsiders Point of View article, decided to post in New Forum Topics:
I hope it's OK to post a bit from the article by Michael Albert, from the link, at znet....
"For example, Greek and Spanish activists said that at assemblies initially people spoke with incredible passion of their plights and desires. Their voices often broke. Their hands shook. Each time someone rose to speak, something real, passionate, and persistent happened. It was enchanting and exciting. People were learning not only new facts and interpretations - and, indeed, that kind of learning was relatively modest - they were also learning new confidence and new modes of engaging with others. But after days and then weeks, the flavor of the talks shifted. From being new folks speaking passionately and recounting their reasons for being present and their hopes for their future by delivering deeply felt and quite unique stories, the speakers shifted toward being more seasoned or habituated folks, who lectured attendees with prepackaged views. The lines of speakers became overwhelmingly male. Their deliveries became overwhelmingly rehearsed. Listening to robotic repetition and frequent predictable and almost text-like ranting got boring and alienating. Sometimes it was even demeaning."
That is the power of the 99%, the simple construct that there are tons of people whose stories can be heard and changed by the movement. To deny them is to deny the movement.
I've only been involved with OLA since OWS was raided but I am already blown out. I cannot look to the person speaking & watch "the General of Hollywood blvd. Juan" disrupt the person speaking, discourage people from speaking & demean others. I cannot be lead in a [LONG] cheerleaders ditty by someone whose passion is a LOTTO scheme, i.e. JoCKED. I cannot listen to someone over & over about why he's a candidate for President & how bad we are for not following him, because there is no one willing to CALL them on it, because they are SOOOO NICE. The simple mechanism to trigger that being to call a consensus on what they are doing, so that everyone could say "we had a consensus; Juan, 1st stay out of the speakers space, sit down, shut up, participate." If not Adios. Big Money; your Lotto scheme is bonkers and your chant, LONG & a high school cheerleaders fight song. Stop! The guy running for President; YOU did not understand, We are a leaderless movement. Stop. The power is that it would be agreed upon by consensus, like 90%, because what they are doing is THEIR OWN ACTION against others participating in OLA, by taking up what limited time peoples have to give.
There should be a mechanism in the process, that when people complain about something so egregious, an automatic consensus forum is called for a GA. It would take a bit of time out of a GA, but would SAVE ENORMOUS amounts of TIME and mainly give someone wanting to join, speak & participate, the chance.
I'm sorry if I seem angry, but at this time there are others who have contributed, much much more than I, who DO NOT DESERVE TO BE DEPRESSED by people who are not all there, who could care less if others are not there. They've got the stage, if others are suffering, WHO CARES? They've got the STAGE. It's nauseatingly "Sunset Boulevard."
I thought to myself, "Do I want to fight this myself?" I could bring pom pom's.... Oh. Please, Oh, Please, let me be the unofficial (: OFFICIAL :) cheerleader. When Juan throws out one of his bits, if it stuck, I could cheer wildly & remind him "Oh yes, yes, yes, remember that. When not, put my pom pom's to my knees & shake my head, you don't need to remember that one." I could come up with some new High School cheerleading chants. I promise, I wasn't jockish so I don't know many, I think one would be; Occupy, Occupy, stand up, sit down fight fight fight! Oh Please, Please, Please! I can't do splits & at my age taking a tumble, I don't know... but I promise, I promise, I'll be the best OLA cheerleader, EVER. I've got the spirit, I've got the spirit, S P I R I T (Goodness, I remembered another or at least part of another... whatever) Thank You, Thank You, Thank You, Thank You, Thank You, Thank You, Thank You, Thank You, Thank You, Thank You, Thank You. Hurray! See!
I'm sure you're tired of my posts already. I know I am.
