I think that an amazing outreach would be Occupy Caroling, it would let people who are unsure about us know that we are willing and able to come into their neighborhood peacefully with some good old fashioned holiday singing. I have been thinking long and hard about the songs that we might use (and would LOVE to hear your suggestions!) with the self imposed restraints that they be gender neutral, not specifically religious, have no swear words and have a good message... so I slightly reworded some of them to keep them more singer and listener friendly. Here is what I have come up with: (the 4 traditional caroling songs) Let There Be Peace On Earth and Let it Begin With Me, Deck the Halls, Frosty the Snowman, and Winter Wonderland (and the 4 non-traditional caroling songs) Seize the Day [Newsies], The Times They Are A-Chaning', Simple Song of Freedom, and What's Goin' On.
In my experience it works best to have at least 8 singers and it works best to notify the neighborhoods that you are going to at least 24 hours in advance, perhaps with mini-flyers on their door telling of roughly when you will be knocking on their door. Does three different days with two hours of caroling each day in different neighborhoods sound good, or is it too much, or not enough? I would also suggest that we collect food donations and give them to a local food bank or homeless shelter to make the holidays a bit better for LA residents. I don't know the neighborhoods we would be going to as I am not from anywhere near here, I don't know where the food would be donated as I am not from anywhere near here, and I don't even know if anybody would want to *do* Occupy Caroling or if this is just a dream of mine, so I am here to ask how you feel about this proposition. What suggestions for songs do you have? Would you be willing to join in? Do you have any neighborhoods in mind? What about homeless shetlers/food banks? Should we do this on a weekend, or on weeknights? What dates sound good to people? I am excited for your feedback, thank you for your time!
Please remember: Our voices might not be great seperately, but together our voice is beautiful. Occupy!
(I'm sorry I have put this two places now, but the other place I put it seems a bit... abandoned and in retrospect I should have just put it here instead.)

A WAY better name
Submitted by Pash on
One of the Occupy Carolers suggested that we change our name to Occupella-- and I totally agree!
Please respond with:
1. Occupella: Excellent name, or not?
2. Please suggest a neighborhood to sing in, I only know Pasadena.
3. Please suggest where to donate the food we get.
4. If there are any other songs that you feel would be good decisions, please let them be know.
5. Most importantly: We need at least 5 more singers, will you be willing to sing with us from roughly 5:30-7:00 PM on December 19th-December 21st?

Caroling Schedule

Tuesday, December 6th at 5 PM or 17:00 we will be meeting on the East steps of the City Hall and learning the songs. I will have lyric sheets, we will be getting 4 caroling songs from one of our singers that were rewritten specifically for Occupy and I am excited to see what we get. We will learn the songs until 7:00 PM or 19:00 hours and then head to the West steps for the General Assembly. Then, on Tuesday December 13th, we will be meeting at the same place, at the same time, to practice one more time before we perform. Finally, on December 19th, December 20th, and December 21st we will be meeting to carol in three neighborhoods that will be determined this week by our Occupella members, at 5:30 PM or 17:30 and we will be caroling until 7:00 PM or 19:00. The food that we are collecting at the houses we carol at will be given to the Los Angeles Food Bank, and to warn the home owners of our objective/give them time to prepare I will be fliering those neighborhoods 24-72 hours in advance of our night in their neighborhoods. If you have any ideas for neighborhoods to carol in, please respond to this. We will also be having a professional photographer join us for at least one section of one of the nights to document our work, and we are discussing getting some video of us spreading the holiday cheer. Hope to see you there!
