i propose that the following offer be put on the bargaining table:
1. That the Mayor and the LAPD arrange a news conference with all media to permit each and every person now in the park to be allowed one full minute to express his or her personal opinion on Live National Television and announce one of two personal choices: A. To be voluntarily and peacefully arrested on the spot by LAPD and voluntarily escorted away without handcuffs, unless the person wishes to be hancuffed;
or B. To voluntarily and peacefully abandon the physical occupation of the park, under protest, to be voluntarily escorted away by non-police staff from the Mayor's office to be assisted in finding housing or/and employment options, as well as social services.
This would be an unprecedented and creative solution that would earn great respect for both the Los Angeles protesters and the City of Los Angeles.
Being arrested forcibly is a predictable and unnecessary ritual that could be mocked and used in hostile political campaigns in misleading manners.
It is obvious that the protesters can force the cops to arrest them. nothing new in that. But this choice would create great resentment among sympathetic non protesters among the 99 percent who will suffer financially from further cuts in services due to the added expense of the police deployment.
There have been thousands of sympathizers from local businesses that are confuse on how to interpret the events in transition now.
Hostile media will condemn the Mayor as stupid, foolish, or naive for not having used police force to evacuate the protest immediately, when there were few and no community or clear vision had begun to form.
On the other hand, if protesters find a way for this Mayor to gain stature for having sincerely respected the rights of protesters and having sincerely extended an open hand to engage in dialogue, then Gandhi's way and King's way will have achieved a great victory.
The whole world is indeed watching, from Syria to Oakland. But they are not just watching the cops, they are also watching the grass roots protesters.
In order to control the terms of the public spin and symbolism, as well as the emotional impact on the local residents and workers, this win-win proposal would give the Los Angeles community a superior position of leadership in democratic processes, even as lighthouse.
