Oftentimes the mainstream media has come to report on us at Occupy Los Angeles. This is a good thing and we need good press on the Movement.
Sometimes they are here to find something they can slander us with. An article released usually defines the writers true assignment, but it's difficult to know what thier real assignment is when in the moment and on camera with them.
Usually, they have an angle that their story will display, and they know the angle before they even arrive at our camp. They will find people to question so they can get the dialogue needed for the angle, then they will edit and build the story angle. This is the mainstream media. Remember it's a tactic and there's a war going on. Remember that the media is a powerful weapon in modern warfare.
It's important to either alert someone from PR or media, or if you can handle it and represent, do so. Always represent us on point and with pride, regardless of our internal issues of which we are all doing our best at, to keep the love going, and of which are none of their business to misconstrue with or slander us with, which will lead to our eviction.
Be polite and well versed on our movement. If they ask you a question and you suspect it seems like they are digging for dirt, ask them if they have any food or blankets to donate. If they ask again, just repeat the process. We need donations, not bullshit. Good Luck and represent well.
For clarity, here are the complex issues for all to remember in a simple yada yada...
Occupy Wall Street (OWS) launched it's actions on September 17th, 2011
it is an ongoing series of demonstrations in New York City based in Zuccotti Park in the Wall Street financial district. The protests were initiated by the Canadian activist group Adbusters. They are mainly protesting social and economic inequality, corporate greed, corruption and influence over government—particularly from the financial services sector—and lobbyists. The protesters' slogan, "We are the 99%", refers to the difference in wealth between the wealthiest 1% and the rest of the population.
1. On October 1st, 2011, Initiates launched Occupy Los Angeles (OLA)
2. Occupy Los Angeles is supported by The City Council and even passed the "Resolution in Support of Occupy Los Angeles"(Occupy Irvine learned from OLA and presented their own resolution is support of Occupy Irvine, it passed)
A. We are a peaceful protest
B. At OLA our protests are in Solidarity with OWS - We are protesting:
1) corporate greed
2) inequality, both socially and economically
3) corruption: the financial services sector/lobbyists influence over government and it's elections
C. The slogan, "We are the 99%", refers to the difference in wealth between the wealthiest 1% and the rest of the population.
Comrades, here are some of the dirt topics they have used so far.
We don't know what our demands are. Uh.. yes we do and we that the ball is in Wall Street's Court, we'll see what happens when all the banks start weeping after November 5th.
We displaced Farmer's Market. We have been working with Farmer's Market ever since the Fire Dpt. informed us that the Fire Department had a problem with us and Farmers Market sharing the space. It has been resolved, the farmers are in our 99% too
For a list of more read the article Occupy L.A.'s 99%: Plenty of Action and Media Manipulation -this article also lists a number of great actions completed by OLA.
Also see Declaration of the Occupation of New York City the Declaration has been adopted by OLA as well.

OLA displaced the farmers' market.

I am sorry but there is no way to dispute the fact that OLA displaced the farmers' market. There was nothing worked out by OLA. The market was forced to move at the last minute. The City gave the market a new location that is still in the works. It was the only spot available and the fact that it is across the street doesn't actually mean that regular customers will return. In fact many have not.
What is so sad about this is that most at the market view themselves as the 99%. However, much has been said and written to discredit them now because their story is being told. I am particularly sad that it has been claimed that these farmers and vendors, the working poor, are illegal aliens, lying about their losses, overpricing their food and that their food is bad. It makes me sick to read.
Instead of spinning and blaming the media and farmers' market, maybe plan actions that support the 99% in your midst. The 99% is all around you and none should be considered collateral damage. Irony looks more like hypocrisy when it is defended.
