How the collected money is controlled.
Submitted by Swietlik on
Will the funds raised go directly to the Occupy LA resources committee? If that's the case it would basically be under direct control of the general assembly. (Note: the resource committee can authorize purchases of less than $50 at thier meetings on tue, thur, sat and sun at 6pm, we meet at sister cities)
Or will the Hip Hop Benefit event organizers best decide how the money should be spent to support Occupy LA?

At the point of when it was first organized, when we still had a camp I believe they were going to earmark the money for various purposes to donate, Now I will be hooking them up with resources so they can work out the details of the donation.
Unfortunatly with losing the physical occupation, I also lost my home, and have just begun to get caught up on all the different things I have on my plate, and honestly my bad, I should have promoted it sooner. Its just been a crazy two weeks, as I am sure many of you can understand.
I'll talk to my contact in all of of this... My phone is broken, so everything must be done via email. Its great to be a revolutionary... :)

Occupy Wall Street needs to shut its stupid mouth.
How dare they count every person in the ninety-nine percent they talk about as in with them.
They do not have a right to speak for me.
I like the rich.
Many of them started with nothing or almost nothing.
Steve Jobs and countless others became VERY rich after being very poor.
They did not complain.
They had ideas and went with them.
The top one percent creates jobs.
Our companies, stores, firms and on and on that employ millions were not started by poor people.
They were started by the wealthy.
Now, OWS states that the rich are our enemy.
Great, go against those who create so much.
Occupy Wall Street has got to be the most stupid bunch of idiots to ever band together.
They have no real clue as to what they are doing.
In Los Angeles, they accomplished nothing and left a mess that cost the city a lot of money.
In Seattle, OWS blocked docks and tried to prevent people from going to work.
Yet, they claim they want people to go to work.
The entire Occupy movement is a joke.
They talk for the entire ninety-nine percent, but of those ninety-nine percent of the people, about ninety percent are working.
I live in Beverly Hills and I'm doing fine.
I don't need Occupy Wall Street to tell me what to do.

George...you don't need OWS?

The OWS movement is about the corruption of the political system by the large banks and corporations...not about people who have made something of themselves unless they are corrupt as well. It is not anti-capitalism itself, but the bastardization of the political and corporate landscape whereby the politicians have become corrupted by big business at the expense of the citizens who voted them in. Just because you live in Bev Hills doesn't mean you are immune to the corruption and most likely you aren't wealthy enough to be in the top 1% anyway. So, if you do not pay any taxes, use any banks, breath air, consume any food, gas or consumer goods, then yes, you are not affected. But if you do, then you are most definately affected by the corrupt system.
I hope that clears it up for you George, because you are part of the 99% whether you like it or not.

As an active OLA Occupier I'm not real keen about the idea of OccupyLA listing an event they are not endorsing or planning and no way to know for sure if the funds really will go towards Occupy Movement. How does it benefit? "As winter sets in, warm clothes, blankets and warm food will be needed more than ever." In Los Angeles? In New York? Seattle? Location? We have 30 people who were kicked out because of 1 tent - will this benefit help them? I have 2 Occupiers who volunteered every single day at City Hall who need to get home to Arkansas - can we help them? Who & how this benefits the Occupy Movement & whom it helps, really needs to be listed before I offer my tiny limited money.
I Occupy because I may be physically limited but I am not dis abled.
I Occupy because everyone should have equal opportunities.
I Occupy because I am not afraid to stand up to greed and corruption

No one is giving ME money and I work 12-16 hours a day. I have a temporary place to stay, I will be out on January 1st. I am one of our webmasters, on the social media team, as well as very involved in the occupation. I do not beg for OccupyLA to take care of me and others should not either. I occupied full time until the raid since October 1st. I gave up my home to occupy, and lost my home in the raid.
I got a call at 11 oclock last night telling me our occupiers got kicked out of the SEIU lot. I am very disappointed, as they were not being accountable, and that is why they lost it. If they knew people were causing problems, they had the RIGHT to demand that those people leave. Which made them lose thier place, and some very hard working occupiers who were there as well, as a lot of us are now homeless. Instead most of them sat back apathetic, and said nothing, and kept EXPECTING to be taken care of. Since the raid I have been helping other occupiers find places to stay, and looking for one for myself, and the others I am with. Also I have been promoting the SEIU lot and asking for food, clothes, tarps, tents, blankets for the occupiers there. I am not sitting bck and waiting for someone to tell me my next move, and other people shouldn't be either.
OccupyLA is not getting many donations these days if you are not aware... the account had around 10,000 last week, this money will not last long. We need fundraisers. And honestly if these people screw with us, it will make their name garbage in the hip-hop community, as if you weren't aware some rather big name artists in hip hop support the movement. Give them the benefit of the doubt. too many good people have been pushed away by BS in this movement, and as much as people pushed Audiotruther away, he has always consistantly been a part of the movement, occupying most evenings, as he has a real life, and could not stay.
No one got this pissed off when ANTHONY sat and sold shirts there daily, making 300-500 a day or MORE off the t-shirts he made while talking smack about the occupation and occupiers. That guy made thousands of dollars off us, and the occupyla name. Why don't you all go ask him why he didnt donate any of the money he made??? Why did everyone attack me when i called him out on it after watching him collect $300 for a painting and two shirts? Why was no one upset he took the shirts that were being donated for occupiers for PRINT LAB to make shirts for occupyla and other occupations, AND SOLD THEM?
Or what about the guy from www.cninc.com who is selling advertising on cards that say occupyla calaiming the money is for us??? I have one of these cards sitting here in front of me. No explanation back when I emailed them... How much has he collected?
And what about Chris, CR Legal who still has not given back the $600+ in BAIL FUNDS? Why has nothing been done about that?
I think we have a lot more to worry about than a hip-hop concert put on by friends and supporters of the occupation who are putting their NAMES on the line. I expect them to act as professionals, and do the right thing with this, on that basis.

I'm very sorry you lost your home but several people have come to Occupy LA and have offered A LOT of money to help and they were turned down because they were too commercial. So then along comes this event and it's very commercial - what are we to think?
Special favors for special people - that's not ok.
As for SEIU - I disagree with that they were not being accountable. I was there as were others and firsthand experience from people I know and from what I saw, they were working their butt off to maintain the camp, work together and ensure they put forth a good image., It was because of one tent (as I'm told) that the entire camp site was kicked out. They talked to the trouble makers several times and they refused to leave. How did you expect them to get rid of them without a physical confrontation? Shadow did and this is what happened. The people there that I know personally did not and have never expected to be taken care of. In fact, I was trying to find work for the ones I knew so they could help themselves....and you’re not the only one trying to help Occupiers. There are a lot of people out there doing as much as possible to help Occupiers.
But again, there is a lot of un-organized efforts and until we can become organized and work together and not allow egos to get in the way (I am not directing this to you but to all of us) we are going to continue to bump head, lose ground and not be taken seriously.
Anthony & his shirts - yes, people were angry but they could see he was hostile and no one wanted to approach him and be the target of his anger. Even I who bought a t shirt from him asked if I could take a picture, he said yes, I did and then he got angry for me for doing so. What should I have done? Physically try to remove him? Would you have helped me to do so? Would anyone else? I highly doubt it.
Print Lab - same thing
Organization - WE MUST HAVE IT
There is a lot of un-organization in OLA that is hurting OLA
We are not attacking you but we are questioning how the funds are being managed - do we not have that right as Occupiers?
I Occupy because I may be physically limited but I am not dis abled.

Yes I am a wrestler, no the catering link has nothing to do with me. On google you will find I have been a long time activist for many causes. Look at my various profiles, look at my FB and things i have been involved with.
As far as donors turned away, I know very little about that, I do know that we would not take money if it came with a price. We also do not take donations over $5,000, but we were voting to change that. We had issues due to the banking situation, now the resource team formed an unicorperated association, things will change.
Anyone who knows me knows I spent a lot of time organizing people, and rallying people to do things. I worked security from 0ctober 2nd on. I rallied people to throw Frank out to the police after he assaulted one and ran back into camp. I am a 5'2 woman and I was never afraid to walk up to someone and demand they leave due to bad behavior. Not many would stand behind me.
Maybe I am not used to this gentrified way of life. Its a lot different in NY. And honestly i don't care who I offend as I feel its offensive that many of the other occupiers let this kind of behavior slide.
We need donations, we need fundraising, we need a lot to happen. Its really hard right now as our key people are spread all over the city, just trying to survive. The donations dried up long ago. We can not sustain on donations alone, we need do to things, provide things, for things to be provided for us. I provide people with info and news to the best of my ability. I cannot do everything in every committee, but there are plenty of others out there who want to and can partiucipate, but they are being held back... by what I am not sure.
No one asked me to join the media team/web team. I went up on the first day offered assistance, gave my info, was blown off. I spoke to the web developer the 2nd night, and he gave me contributer, editor, then admin status as I gained trust and worked. It has not ben easy, and I have been working with a lot of wrenches thrown in. I am doing this because I want to, and feel I have to, not because someone is making me, or asked me to. Anyone can be involved, but they can't sit back and wait for someone to ask them!
If anyone would like to help with fundraising, I suggest going to resource meetings! We could use it!

This event is as much for the Occupy LA fam as it is for the artists and Hip Hop community , the Occupy movemen moves so fast not everyone who wants to contrubute has been able too, so an event like this because it allows the artists to give in a way they are comfortable and the fans to come out and support in a way how they're comforatable. It's a win-win for eevryone, also it's it help reachs Occupy out reach objectives as well as opeining and diversing the movements perspection.
Myself and all parties involved hold a great deal of pride and resposablity into assuring all resources gathered are distrubuted through a transparent way, along with apporate the GA and commitee processes.

They can't see that the same 1% who rape them are the same 1% who rape the undocumented.
Failed immigration is created and designed by the elite who run both governments. This is no different than failed mortgages, failed health care, loss of jobs, and our failing economy. This insidious 1% causes these failures because they profit at the expense of both the US taxpayers and the Mexican undocumented.
Are American voters really so propagandized that they can't figure out why not one single U.S. politician criticizes the Mexican government for anything? The undocumented would not come or stay here if that filthy, corrupt co-trading partner of the American elite would take care of its own citizens. The majority of undocumented care deeply about their families and would stay at home if they could make a decent living wage working with their families.
Its about bi-national drug profits, trade, oil, remittances, the privatization of prisons, cheap labor, weapons profit, NAFTA, and a 40 year long political platform that only sways back and forth, and never forward.
I invite OWS to embrace the undocumented who are protesting. Shame on both these pitiful governments who fail to address the immigration nightmare that they profit from. http://twopesos-protestfortheundocumented.blogspot.com/2011/11/american-...
