How to Manage Media Coverage 101

Forums:

As I wrote in a forum yesterday, Occupy LA is doing great actions that go unreported in the media because it appears no one is sending out press releases on those actions.

There should be a daily release going out to ALL SoCal press.

Send one to me and I will get it out. It is simple.

Here is an example from Occupy Sacramento, which puts out a release every day.  This provides media with the message YOU want to send.  Often, they will go with it verbatim.

In this Occupy Sacto case, it is about fighting arrests.  But in Occupy LA's case, it should be about why you are Occupying in the first place.  TELL the stories of people in foreclosed homes whose homes have been saved because people camped out in their yards.  TELL the stories of getting locked out of B of A.  Tell a story EVERY day about what actions you are taking and WHY.  OWN YOUR OWN NARRATIVE, and share it with the press.  You'll get much better coverage that way, and all you are doing is telling the truth.

PLEASE TRY IT!!!!!!!

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE   October 31, 2011

Day26/Monday  Lawyers to file Federal civil rights lawsuit against city of Sacramento Tuesday; 'Occupiers' ask for restraining order against city to stop arrests.

SACRAMENTO - Volunteer lawyers announced late Monday they will file a civil rights lawsuit in federal court Tuesday on behalf of those arrested at Occupy Sacramento - and ask for a temporary restraining order to stop arrests at the Cesar Chavez park demonstration.

Details will be released TUESDAY 2 PM at the Federal courthouse (fifth and I streets.) Lawyers and Plaintiffs will be available for comment.

Similar Federal lawsuits in other U.S. cities have resulted in an end to arrests.

79 people have been arrested for asserting their First Amendment rights at Cesar Chavez Park since October 6 when Occupy Sacramento began.  So far about half of those have gone to court on misdemeanor charges (six months jail, $1,000 fine.)When the District Attorney refused to file charges last week claiming no laws were broken, the City of Sacramento took over the prosecution.

All were defended by either a dozen volunteer lawyers or the public defender office.

Media's Job

while it is true media is key in getting our message out to main stream media and the public at large.... media is also key in providing a narritive for occupiers.

epic fail.
