Arts/Entertainment Team Meeting Brainstorm

Forums:

Hi Team,

I'm posting the notes here because I have these while Rob has the email list.

Open Mic- poetry, speakers, musical performance w/ emphasis on educating

Think of mission statement

Theme?  99% - also 1% for mock counter-protest

Games- for boredom and functionality, ie Corporate Crimes Trivia, Human Monopoly etc

Street theatre

Name chosen for team: Team Expression

Library of pertinent reading materials

Projector content

Songtime

Large-scale Installation work

Unified Activity with NY and CHI

Wall St Bull Pinata

Voted to kick-off occupation with playing or recitation of JFK's "secret societies" speech

Theme

We need to have a universal theme related to taking our country back.  It's about creating jobs and taxing the uber-rich and getting our kids educated and rebuilding our infrastructure and getting out of the misguided wars.  It's about exposing and weakening the MSM because they are not the news source they once were - they are simply a propanga projector of the Oligarch's imagination.  The theme is there - we need to have a united message that encompasses all of it - because we're all mad as Hell and we're really at that point where we're not going to take it any more.  I think we need to toss around ideas and come up with some winning slogans.

Arts & Entertainment Team

Hi All - I'm sad I haven't made it down to GAs the past few days - but tonight!

I'm sending along lightly edited email I sent to Stacey this morning   ...also I'm wondering if there is an arts and culture committee as of yet - I've been talking with people from the Aesthetics & Protest journal - http://www.joaap.org/ great journal if you haven't seen it - as well I've been talking with other artists - performance artists etc to present work - also I was thinking of getting visual artists together to do a series of prints which I will publish through my small press - Insert Press donating all proceeds to #OccupyLA - and we'll be sure to post lots of them around etc    I've been doing my best to keep an eye on all the media coverage out in the world and posting it around as much as possible on twitter facebook etc   and some notes I sent to a few local artists this morning

I have no plans for TrespassLA http://trespassparade.org/ - I did email Sara there just to see if there was any possible connection - I'm not doing anything in particular for Trespass - they invited me but I wasn't so much ready to be 'another roadside attraction' these days I've just been doing a whole bunch too much lately and don't so much want to just look busy you know

I myself would like to do some choral performances down at OccupyLA - did you see any video documentation of The Saffron Green that Geneva and I did? http://vimeo.com/27353553 yeah I'd love to work on that piece some down there - even with some people possibly without much rehearsal - and pretty much just work on choral protest chants    generally tho I think it would help to talk with the other arts committee people and help coordinate and curate - also I think it would be great to try and get some truly good work on display down there - I've noticed that a number of different people have been making posters for Occupy LA - some of them are pretty good too - I think it would be great to work with some of the artists we know to make some limited edition prints - I'd be happy to help work on them publish them through Insert Blanc Press and give proceeds to #OccupyLA - as well as just get some good visual work out there that draws attention to the occupation    anyway - dunno if any of this is in line with the committee -    one other thing I'd like to say - I'm not a big fan of 'Team Expression' as the name of the group - I'd be happy to go into reasons ...   best anathematas

Visual Artist

Hello!

I am an artist looking to create a few public arts projects to bring attention to the movement.  While I have some ideas, I would love to communicate with others to see what we can do together.

I agree with the need for a unified message.  It seems that we can all agree on one thing:

This movement is a challenge towards the way "Wall Street" has systematically taken advantage of citizens and how the federal government seems to be supporting their agenda instead of what is best for the American people.

We need to make sure the people of America know that we are not looking for handouts, but for reform.

Demands for comprehensive reform will show America that our movement is a serious peaceful protest for change.

I was hoping to set up a physical area at the City Hall Park for people to discuss project ideas and offer their skills/talents for collaborative efforts tomorrow, but I was told on the OccupyLA Facebook page that people are already doing this in the form of this committee.  Is this the committee doing this?  I would love to get involved.

The project ideas I have are public art projects, as that is where my skill have been focused.  I am also a writer, organizer and a computer savvy person.  Where can I help out?

- Natalie

Comedy

I know many Comedians who've gone around the world making people laugh--they've also supported the troops over seas with some laughter. This'd be a good thing when people are just looking to laugh or be entertained after working so hard. Maybe this can be organized for next week or the week after.

blah blah blah blah blah blah

Exactly

Well said. To lighten any situation, there is no alternative than comedians. They can make your cruital moments enjoyable! So, a comedy show is always a plus. So, your proposal is really appreciable. I think the organizer should thik about it.

Occupy the Parade, Performance Interventions

I'm talking with the organizers of Trespass Parade to overlap with Occupy LA in some way.  http://trespassparade.org/about

I'm not sure if there is an opening there but I will try to find some place to move inside and inhabit it.
I'm thinking about a way for them to overlap physically at some point, or to have some infiltration of the Trespass Parade by Occupy LA- not as an official token representation, but as an infiltrating presence that somehow influences the course and presentation of the parade itself.
I'm meeting with the organizers today and will try to see what space is open there.

I LOVE the documentation of Saffron Green- you had great performers! : ) I'm down for participating if you stage that on Sat.  Let me know what time.
Maybe there's a way to use your radios in the Trespass Parade and broadcast the performance there as well- with performers being sited elsewhere in the city, not on the route or in the actual parade....so there's a decentralization of the parade and it's participants, less exclusion, more inclusion.

Re: choral protest chants, Islands of LA has recent work with public performances of historical protest songs.  http://islandsofla.org/wp/
One of the benefits for integrating performance into protest is to fight some of the cultural/historical amnesia so inherent in our culture; I love their recent project in this context and think it could have a great impact, alone or in conjunction with Saffron Green.

This was also part of Corpus Delicti's work during the Iraq war protests in utilizing Butoh as a historical art form that rose out of Japan's nuclear decimation. http://www.corpusbutoh.org/vision2.html

We haven't been active for some time, but I'm contacting a few members here so they're aware of this current possibility.

I think the posters are a great idea...how can we help design and print?

Also, I had talked with the Llano Del Rio organizers about staging two interventionist gestures I wrote for their recent publication Scores for the City.  http://ldrg.wordpress.com/guides/
One is a hammock intervention where folks install hammocks around the city and lay in them for extended periods of time, occupying space in a leisure position that is literally suspended and interstitially located.
The other is a billboard intervention where a group climbs the access ladder and has a meeting/meal/gathering on the billboard itself, using it as a stage/backdrop for their purposes.
I would be down for organizing those interventions for Sat or anytime during the Occupation.

One request- can we separate arts from entertainment? Or at least connect and discuss them critically...

Thanks!

I'm not an art theorist,

I'm not an art theorist, maybe someone can explain this.  I posted a notice about this civil disobedience happening at la placita church, opposing the war.  It's mostly what I'd call an "older folks" protest, by people more in touch with the 60s than, say, today's protest styles.

The old style was to get arrested.  The new style, used in the colleges and Wisconsin, is to occupy space.

Granted, they did occupations back then, too, but now they're older and focus on getting arrested, which takes less time.

I think what's changed is that the laws are a lot tougher today, and when you have a city with a lot of undocumented people, with high levels of youth incarceration, lots of student debt, CD arrests take on a different quality.

With this occupation protest, I sense a different dynamic.  It's an inclusionary space that's threatened by the law, but is fundamentally about people caring for each other.  The discursive style of meeting - it's almost like group talk therapy for a democratic society in shock.

I'm just saying some food for thought there.

Sue Basko's picture

VERY interesting post. Thank you.

This is a very interesting post to me.  I bridge the gap age-wise and I know what you mean about the arrests.  I have always thought it foolish to intentionally get arrested.   Old-style protesters very often bragged about how many times they have been arrested.  Part of the thing that has always bugged me about this is that these were almost always white males with enough clout not to be mistreated in custody and enough money to have someone bail them out really fast. Their privileged position made getting arrested a breeze.

For most people, things are not that way.  ALSO -- and this is a big point -- in my opinion. the arrests helped nothing.  AND the most important point -- is that the arrests cause harm.  What arrests do is pose the situation as Cops vs "The People".  It is a clever way to divide up people who are actually part of one team (poor and middle class), have them divided instead of standing together as one solid unified team.

How about have the new Los Angeles style of protest -- that involves being peaceful and intelligent?

Making enduring change or rebuilding a seriously broken society does not happen in a few days or weeks.  I hope all of you are committed to it for the long haul.  Just thinking that you might be has me very excited.

I see these as the biggest societal problems in the U.S. now, in no particular order:  Housing prices, student loan debt, jobs without benefits, jobs with no future, health care and dental care unavailable for most, destruction of natural environments.

I see these things as the best, most powerful things now:  The internet, computers, media-creation available to all, people aware and practicing things such as ecology, recycling, gardening, healthy eating, alternative health cares, multi-culturalism.

Okay I lost track of what the topic was supposed to be.  lol.

Programming

Though a lot of us would find mocking billionaires funny I think we could really benefit from staying positive this early in the game. Instead of asking who to blame I find it's more effective to ask who benefits. the answer is usually the same but the delivery is more effective imo. we are the 99% but do not need to resort to the 1% actions.  We are still young and need to ensure our message is clear. There are photos released by anonymous of wall st. execs who were sipping champagne over the protesters. To me it's not about being tactful, it's about tooting our own horn before we have the trumpet. Idk, just my opinion. Plus we will marginalize part of a possible audience because a lot of the reason these insufficient policies endure, IMO is that there is a misguided sense of 'protect the wealth'... "because one day i'll be rich". (Which is more than likely... not what is going to happen). As a theme, i think we should bring it up for GA or maybe table it for later in the occupation? Thoughts?

Mark,
I think connecting to education and the hands of wall st. in national security are very important topics to hear about. As a group internally maybe we can choose what the frequency of the speakers will be (daily.. multiple on weekends, etc) and a list of topics we can present to the group and then prioritize. (since they should at least not have any oppositions to the relevance of issues and they know in what areas we are looking for speakers so they can reach out too). This would also include ironing out a schedule for the beginning of our occupation.. maybe one speaker on saturday night (or we can open with our own talent/speak out) and perhaps have a solid programming schedule for Sunday.

I know someone who specializes in urban politics (race and the intersection with poverty and power) which i think is important for reaching out.  There is a professor who could speak on education as well who is working in fullerton with a group called WE, who refer to themselves as educational revolutionaries. They participated in a sit in of the presidents office at CSU fullerton to protest budget cuts and actually created a declaration for the right to an education and to be treated as more than "human capital". I also have a former professor who has taught classes on "sex, power and politics" as well as "political movements and social reform".

I also agree that we should discuss critically arts and entertainment.

"Truth never damages a cause that is just.” Mahatma Gandhi

There's a labor org United

There's a labor org United for Universal Healthcare that's pushing CA to go to single payer.  Vermont just did it.  The people who could present are Cate Engel and Lenny Potash.  They're very policy wonky, but I always enjoy listening to them because they mix the pragmatic with the possible.  Another group One Care does the same, for the wider population, but I don't know them.

Messaging, goals, symbols of sacrifice and non-participatory act

In thinking about how to create a strong and lasting movement, and how to win over more followers, it seems there are at least three things it needs.

1) Credibilty

2) Represents common values

3) Has a sense of direction and purpose

Regarding #3, we need to be able to communicate to people how participating in this movement can accomplish the goals we seek. We need to articulate a "Theory of Change" that indicates we believe IF we take action(s) "X" this can lead to "Y" And also why we believe those actions can lead to Y. Example of a common theory of change "IF union workers go on strike THEN this will put pressure on management to comply with worker demands becaue of depleted resources (labor)".   I would recommend coming up with our Theory of Change, and ways to express it, to be a top agenda item.

Related to this, because at least one of our goals is the reduction of power and influence from mega-corporations and to alter their actions, we must look at what gives these corporations their power and enables these hamful actions to occur. And one is the participation of the citizens in the corporate economy. Therefore it seems a key component of the movement is taking action that will make people being wlling to sacrifice and not participate in the economy. This would indicate to the corporations that the movement is a real threat, because it will hurt them where it matters most, their pocketbook. And that the harmful actions they are engaging in will have real consequences, as it will cause people to withdraw from the economy. Therefore any discussion of expression should involve how do we communicate this idea of sacrifice and ways to not participate in the economy.

Any expression in this regard should have the following goals:

1) To motivate and encourage others

2) To inform people about ways they can not participate in the corporate economy, yet still have access to the things they need (food, clothing, entertainment, art, etc..)

3) To add credibility to the cause

4) Communicate our values

5) Communicate by how engaging in these actions, and the larger movement, it can reduce corproate power and influence,  alter their hamful actions, and achieve our larger goal.

How this plays out I don't exactly know. Maybe create a mock community garden, to show that there are ways to not participate in the corporate economy and still have sustenance (and its even better, as the food grown is healthy and tastes better). Also community gardens are great for building community, and are a symbol of community, which is a longing many have. And what partly drew me to the movement was your vision for inclusvity and building community. I want to make sure the general public sees that important and shared common value.

In fact I know someone who is involved in hydroponic community garden techology that is mobile. I'll see if we can use that technology. I'm not exactly sure how the logistics of all this would play out. But I think it could be a valuable asset to the cause.

We should  come up with other things that we can do though, that are powerful symbols that encourage people to sacrifice and not participate in the corporate economy, and specific ways of doing so.

Actions for Saturday and Sunday

Hi All again - npopp! great to see this here - I too think coordinating with TrespassLA in some way makes very good sense! I'm willing to help in any way

Jeff - I thought most of the way reading thru your post that it belonged in a different part of the forum - and I think much of what you say there you should echo in other sections about bringing together a message for/from the group - also tho I think the gardening is a great idea and is proly something that makes sense as a concern for the arts and entertainment group - sounds great!

I am planning on doing a kind of endurance reading on Saturday and Sunday whenever I can come by and for whoever cares to gather around - I also hope people will engage with me in some discussion and feel free to interrupt my reading - it's a book that I believe relates directly to the We Are the 99% message and my interest in this book is directly related to my interest in the #OccupyWallStreet and #OccupyLA movement - so I'll be reading from this http://www.blancpress.com/credit/

I hope nobody minds if I take it upon myself to do so - I'm pretty sure it's right in the ballpark of what we're doing - but please let me know if so - I have no idea what the encampment is going to look like on Saturday and so I will have to figure out a spot for where to stage such an endurance reading - but rest assured I will be respectful - and I definitely encourage anyone else interested in doing some kind of readings of related materials to be in touch and maybe we can figure out some scheduling etc

I'm not sure yet exactly when I'll be able to be there sat tho I'm planning on meeting at pershing for the march to city hall at 10am and I'm getting very excited to see how this all comes together

Live Art

There is a small group of local artists, including myself who would like to bring live art to the event. We are a group of painters who regarly create live for audiences and we would love to bring our creative energy to the occupation. Do you think that the live painting to communicate our messages would be encouraged or discouraged?

YES!

We are on the same page. Flash protests might be cool including actors, poets, musicians ... on Hollywood Blvd and other specific places that can get attention and provide a good amount of contact with the public. Also city council meetings. It is a waking up process..... Also if we can get a weekend thing going that provides a connecting point for different communities with music, poetry and art that would help to take this up another notch.

The arts have a serious amount of power in this situation —

Stay in right frequency and we'll get through this portal fine. :)

How can we get on the Arts and Entertainment email list? Would love to be a part of a Skype call or meeting.

couple things

my wife and i are artists (you can see the website link in my sig) and are primarily interested in the more spiritual side of life. we are firm believers in the einstein way of looking at things: "No problem can be solved from the same level of consciousness that created it."

We have a show we do where we teach and share the techniques of Perfect Day and Soul Retrieval which we have found have led us to live very happy, fulfilled lives. I am in total support and solidarity with this event, and at the same time, our personal happiness and finances are better than ever and we would love to share the inner processes we have used to bring this to reality--we feel they are universal truths that can be used by anyone--all 99% (or even 100).

We have mics and amps and the whole rigamarole. Please contact me either via here or facebook or our website or just let me know what the situation is. We are very interested in sharing tools we think will be useful in the New Reality.

Thanks,

Otis

Did we meet last night at the GA or will we tonight?

I ended up being late to the GA last night and had to leave early - which meant I was there for two hours - it was a hard GA to make it thru and I'm hoping tonights moves better and flows thru some issues etc -

anyway if we did meet great - how can I find you guys tonight? I'm not super excited about 'expression team' as our moniker - but onward! right?

So anyone gonna be there tonight? wanna meet up before the GA even if only at 6:30?

ART IS OCCUPATION

from a fellow writer artist activist and friend - I would put her name here but dunno how she feels about her name being all up on the forums

...

idea for name of artists bloc:

ART IS OCCUPATION

(multiple meanings intended -- thinking about art as a form of occupying spaces both public and otherwise, the art workers publication and the idea of art/work that temporary services put out a couple years back, the idea that political protest and occupation are forms of art and vice versa -- etc)

Professional editorial cartoonist AND pro harmonica player

Only thang....I'm located up in SLO. Art / graphics not a problem as I can email attachments. Harmonica ..hard to hear at this distance.

I'm trying to develop a local OWS here in SLO, but we should be helping one another.

One of the most compelling arguments that I got at least one person last night to realize was that he is NOT among the 1%, or even 'rich' ...and the reason he feels overtaxed ( he is: 30% on $110K income ) is that the true RICH are not taxed, or undertaxed, thus STEALING from him. I turned his greed against him.

Anyway, respond back here on this thread, and will get back if any interest in my talents.

Gathering Point Today....

Just scanned throught the comments here since I last posted- great to see so many folks dialouging about expressive acts that can shift the balance of power!  Completely support the coonections to education and pedagogy also...

In the spirit of coming together and finding out what we can create in a context of shared goals, a group of us (artists/activists) who have been dialoguing outside this forum will be meeting at OCCUPY LA @ 12 NOON today at the Northeast corner of S Spring and E 1st Street...

join us and we'll get acquainted, make signs, and talk strategies, potential performative and creative actions.

here's what I posted on my FB page:

ART IS OCCUPATION- Artist's Bloc

Meet us tomorrow, Saturday October 1st at 12 NOON

I will be participating in Anathemata's endurance reading from his great project, CREDIT.

AND- is there anyone on this forum from the LA vs WAR crew?  John Carr? Anyone at all?  http://www.vswar.org/

They've done some great organzing in the past...if anyone can connect to them lets get them involved!

Hope to see you at NOON today!!!

Connect after GA tonight?

Thinking there's a good amount of energy down at City Hall - maybe we can all meet after GA tonight - possibly connect by on the sidewalk by the media table - I want to keep this as open as possible - a few of us had some ideas of actions to put on today but most of us were happily bowled over by the numbers and excitement - and were beginning to think on projects to help sustain the occupation over the next couple few several days weeks months - hope to see you there then - best anathematas

Protest songs +Political Theatre + Performance Art

Hey ya,

I'm Katiuska Cruz. I'm also an actor, singer, dancer, percussionist, performance artist, etc., and would really like to gather with other artists/performers and would love to set-up performances for the occupiers and show them our gratitude, love, and keep their spirits up! After the general assembly, I looked and asked everyone where to find "the boy with the neon green shirt" to sign-up, so this is my 2nd resource. I'm literally fully available, and shall be occupying daily.

Kisses, muahs & love to all,

For the record, anti-fed

For the record, anti-fed rhetoric is more right-wing than anything else. Yeah, fed policies aren't the greatest. But the blame game against the fed is more or less designed pull heat away from Wall Street. For example, you'll often hear people say, "The Fed forced banks to use low interest rates." Of course, that's an absolute falsehood, but it's just the kind of nonsense that fuels the anti-fed movement.

Anyhow, this is the "expression" thread, so I wanted to share some picket slogans that may or may not be deemed useful:

Middle Class and Proud

Honk if You're In the 99%

Fannie and Freddie were Framed

There's no Security in Derivatives Securities

Securitization is Starvation

Privatized Gov't is Totalitarian Govt

Feel free to critique / ridicule / malign....

I like them all

One suggestion: "There's No Security in Derivatives"  I think most people will know what you're talking about.

Otherwise, they're all great and I may use one or all of them (if you don't mind). :)

Edit: I just realized this thread may be for committee members only. If so, my apologies. I'm just curious. ;)

That's a great idea

My only caveat would be to avoid any defacement of public property (spray paint, etc.) and keep trespassing to only what's absolutely necessary to deliver the message. But otherwise, it would make a great impact.

Projector Content Idea

I see 'Projector Content' is a recent agenda item. I posted an idea in this same forum (topic: Charlie Chaplin - Powerful Speech) that would involve projecting this beautiful speech from Chaplin. What do you think?

Yeah, the movement's in

Yeah, the movement's in motion with mass militant poetry. In the right light, study becomes insight. But the system that dissed us. Teaches us to read and right. So called facts are fraud. They want us to allege and pledge. And bow down to their God. Lost the culture, the culture lost. Spun our minds and through time. Ignorance has taken over...Sealed
