Forums:
This is a contingency action for us forums users to take.
Why: The OLA Media Team may not do a backup/archive of the website. If – I said, IF – the CH grounds are cleared, then there is a strong possibility the content on this site will be lost, or at least will be inaccessible for a long period of time.
How We Users Can Help: Save the content. The more users who do this, the more multiple backup archives will be created. This will be important for helping the web team to restore content if the site is resurrected – again, only in the event of a worst case scenario playing out come Monday morning.
- Even a simple archive is better than nothing. For instance, I’m just copying selected forum threads to word files and dropping them in an “OLA website” folder that has subfolders, such as: “GA minutes”, “Forums”, “Graphics-flyers”, “Calendar”, “photos”, “Declarations,” etc.
All the other OLA media outlets I can think of are not vulnerable in the same way the website is. For instance, if the physical campsite is cleared, then the FB page will roll on, so will Twitter, livestream texting, individual occupier’s livestream video blogs, YouTube, etc. But not this site, because adding to it depends upon OLA's people, who may not be there, or they will be there, but the equipment will be gone, or scaled back severely. There are too many possibilities to list them all. That's why we should save this content now just in case.

archive.org

Here is an archive site, www.archive.org , where you can request a snapshot of your site. Archive.org has bots that crawl and save websites, or parts thereof, as a snapshot for their Internet Wayback Machine archive, but they are busy and there may not be enough time.
All the same, make sure that, if this site uses a robots.txt file in order to block webcrawlers such as googlebot (Google's bot), yahoobot, etc., that if you want www.archive.org to crawl this site to archive it, to exclude www.archive.org in the robots.txt file for all areas of this site, else the archive bot will also be blocked.
Note that if any area of a site is not excluded in an existing robots.txt file, that area will not be crawled and saved as a snapshot in archive.
send archive.org info to lizsavage, daniil, Alex, Mario, etc

They are the ones who should do this.

Was a time when archive.org was easy, but I've just checked over there and They've gone complicated, aligning with alexa for free archive services while charging a subscription for premier branded storage.....ack!
They currently have no snapshot of this site.
Be sure to settle any conflicts with any existing robots.txt files by enabling archive.org and alexa in the file.

I would Definitely backup the site every 6 hrs. or so.
In the meantime, This is the Internet Wayback FAQ on getting your site archived (may be complicated)
Pass this along:

So where he OLA site is hosted?

The host should have all the files.

Don't Ever Trust Your Host

Not even if it is Your Own Server, just in case the server quits, blows up, hard drive crash with loss of the partition table and index file, etc.
I've been online for over a decade and have seen several forums vanish into the night.
In fact I have seriously foused up my own hard drive on several occasions after a power outage during a critical Windows hard disk write function thanks to errors made by Scandisk, and later by chkdsk...
Seriously?

This doesn't have backup servers and regular site backups?
This site is just asking to be raided by trolls.
Just got back from CH: what I found at Media Tent
Submitted by sfine2 on
As of Sat late afternoon the media tent area is down to a skeleton crew, if that. I asked someone sitting at the media tent entrance if any web team members were around. Maybe, go on back and ask around, the nice lady said, after I explained I started this thread and had info re archive.org. I went back and found everything cleared out from that first tent and the one after that. Beyond was an open area with two people working on laptops and then four guys bullshitting in front of what was supposed to be another media tent (empty). So I passed on the archive.org info to one of the four who said he would get it to people like lizsavage, daniiil, Mario, Alex. --As I was walking away I overheard him telling the others about archive.org as a cool site for archiving HIS OWN website. So, there you are: individualism trumps all.
And now I read argive.org has changed, and not for the better.
On positive note: the fact the media team has removed just about all the gear and is not giving out exactly where . . . how many sites . . .is good, because this website is still up and fully functional despite that.
Sfine: the physical location
Submitted by Mahayana on
Sfine: the physical location of the camp has nothing to do with the content of this website. A nuclear bomb could demolish the entire city of Los Angeles and this website would still be functioning just fine. The only way this information is going to disappear is if Mr.Jonathan Gross (the person that this website is registered to) stops paying hosting fees to Hostgator.com. or if he or whoever the web admin is actually deletes the content. This entire website exists somewhere on a main hostgator server along with at least two backups in different physical locations. I don't think you need to worry about this website disappearing in the event that the camp gets shutdown.

On a side note, I think it's

On a side note, I think it's a great idea to have mirrors of this site. There are plenty of sites out there that get censored and shutdown because of controversial content. With the way this country is going I wouldn't be surprised if they ushered in a China stlye control of what information we see on the internet. There already is plenty of censorship going on mainstream sites such as Facebook & Youtube. It's just a matter of time.

Thanks for communicating, finally.

If you had posted the information just provided in" SFINE: THE PHYSICAL LOCATION, when the word came down about the eviction, to reassure website users, then this thread would not exist. But you didn't. No one did on the web team. No doubt, too busy, and for obvious reasons. So, it is good that you have finally made it official for us: this website is secure and will remain functional no matter what. But now the question is: who is Jonathan Gross? ;-> kidding
I'm actually not at all
Submitted by Mahayana on
I'm actually not at all affiliated with the web team. I just know that information because I have web admin experience (all websites pretty much function the same way) & I did a little investigating. You can go to godaddy.com, type in any website name and it gives you a LOT of information, including name of registrant, their address and phone # and who is hosting the site.

It's actually kinda scary that all that info is out there for the public to see! I was wodering the very same thing. Who is Jonathan Gross?? I have no idea but this site is registered under his name. I've never heard him mentioned before on this site.

Occupy LA web site is hosted by Hostgator....
Submitted by Rancho Larry on
..... as stated by the DNS record. I have experience with hostgator and they are a great company. They supported me fantastically during a hack on my shopping cart last year. The info should be secure as long as the fees are paid. This site should be as little as $4 or $8 a month to host.
A little info on them:
HostGator is one of the world's top 10 largest web hosting companies with more than 7,000,000 hosted domains. We have over 750 employees to provide you superior around the clock support. We are the perfect choice whether you are looking for business, personal, or even Fortune 500 hosting.
