Here’s a link to the citywide police emergency preparedness event in the morning that ends at their picnic where you will be protesting. Really interesting timing:
This was only discovered in the meeting the planners had with the city today, and then was addressed with much discussion at the General Assembly tonite, and the consensus of the group was to go ahead with the initial plan of the 12pm start time. The reality is that there will never be a convenient time or a socially appropriate time to begin an occupation that stands for what we stand for. Also, the majority of people in attendence at this CPAB event will not be police, but will be the community in attendence, both of whom are an audience of individuals that should share our grievances.
ITS A CITYWIDE POLICE EMERGENCY PREPAREDNESS MEETING AND YOU WANT TO CRASH THE AFTERPARTY!!!!??????? Its THAT SIMPLE. The organizers kept glossing over much tonight with “We’re not going slow, we’re going far.” So whats your rush for? Do you want to do it right (and go far) or do you want to drive these people into immediate disaster?
Its not too late to fix these desperately poor choices and make this movement work. Yes, i want this movement to work, but it looks like its got to be torn down and rebuilt to do so.
I promise you, the organizers, having spoken with City Hall are in full awareness that this event moves to the park by City Hall and may go as late as 5 or 5:30 according to them.
this is completely irrelevant. you act as if the police are not apart of the 99%. you aslo act as if that automatically nulls a protest. get real. most wont even be police. plus, we wont be protesting them.
I was at the meeting tonight, and I believe you videotaped it. Please do not edit out the strong group affirmations on two seperate occasions when someone in the group stated “ the police are not a part of the 99%” These are the people voting on how this will play out for the entire group.
The LAPD officers are in support of our movement. I know this because most of my family members are in the department. They will not step in unless the actions of the group turn violent, which is NOT going to happen. I can tell you from firsthand knowledge that many of them would like to march with us, but they fear they might be ostracised by their superiors. They are with us in spirit and support us fully. As of last month I believe, the Police Protective League had to renegotiate their contract with the city and a lot of their benefits were taken away not to mention the most of the pensions of the newer officers. It is a sad situation. I will be there marching for them since they feel they cannot

I read that organizers have already discussed the "occupation" and established rapport with a police sargent. Is it effective to build that rapport with low key discussion with the cops and their families during their event? Are the cops really expecting people to leave their tents at 10:30 and sleep on the sidewalk?
Civil Disobedience does imply that the group will disobey the law at some strategic point in time, right?
Is there a clear reason to target City Hall, and are there other important targets (The California Club maybe)?
It's fine to get permits and consult with the city, but be clear, the police are not "friends" of this or any other movement. Have you not been watching what's happening on Wall Street? Did you see what happened in Egypt? Have you ever been to an anti-war demonstration or any other demonstration where protesters demanded real change? The cops come out like thugs to repress and beat people. This isn't really a controvertial issue with folks who live in South LA or other areas crawling with LAPD or Sheriffs on a daily basis.
Police brutality and violence against protesters, people of color and poor people is not by mistake or by provocation. The cops are the primary enforcers of the status quo on behalf of Wall Street. Of course they pull a salary but they are not "workers" like the rest of us, who don't have jobs that require us to beat and kill working and poor people as a matter of course.
This movement doesn't have to unnecessarily provoke the police, but it should be clear which side of the barricades they are on. The police will not protect us, they are not our friends. It doesn't matter if this or that individual officer is "nice" or part of someone's family. It's about the institution and its role in society. Just like banks, or the Army or other institutions of capitalism, the cops have their place and they will always obey it.

We're on a mission from God.
