Occupy is a social movement made up of activists of all races and from many walks of life. Their goal is to expose and call for reforms to inequality in the justice and economic systems of America. It began in New York with Occupy Wall Street in 2011. Members occupied public space to draw attention to their concerns. Occupy soon inspired many similar movements across the country and worldwide.
Occupy Los Angeles, also referred to as Occupy LA, held their first march on September 24, 2011, and subsequently held a protest at a Hollywood fundraiser for President Obama.
Participants met nightly at Pershing Square to plan a long-term occupation. On October 1, 2011, they pitched tents in Grand Park, in front of City Hall. The peaceful protest was mostly tolerated by city residents and officials.
On November 17, Occupy LA joined with several California unions for a legitimate parade through downtown. Police brandishing weapons lined the route, although the parade remained orderly. At Figueroa Street, the Occupy people set up tents in the middle of the road. In a classic act of nonviolent civil disobedience, 21 people linked arms around the tents, refused to move and were arrested.
A non-permitted union march began later in the day, joined by Occupy people. Walking down Broadway, often in the middle of the street, the protesters were stopped by LA's finest in full riot gear. Encircling the protesters with truncheons and tear gas, the police were ready for action. At that point, veteran labor leader Mario Brito stepped forward and negotiated with officers to allow the march to continue.
Again putting up tents and encircling them at the plaza, the Occupiers chose volunteers to be arrested for trespassing. 73 were arrested. Back at Grand Park, a quiet candlelight vigil and general assembly were held.
Several celebrities including Jesse Jackson, Bill Maher, the punk rock band NoFX and actor Danny Glover visited the Grand Park encampment. Some were interviewed by InsightOut, Occupy's grassroots news outlet, which expressed cynicism toward people who can earn vast sums for tweeting or giving speeches. Were they genuinely concerned about the less fortunate, or was it a mere photo op? There were calls to "occupy Hollywood", to remind high earners that they owe something to those who made them rich.
City Hall eviction
Stating concern about the cleanliness of the park grounds and the safety of children in the encampment, Los Angeles mayor Antonio Villaraigosa announced an eviction order for Monday, November 28, at 12:01 a.m. No one left, and four were arrested.
One day later, police raided the encampment, using a unique divisive strategy that was praised by City Hall officials. 292 were arrested.
Patrick Meighan's Story
Television writer Patrick Meighan was one of those arrested. He posted an account of his experiences on a blog created for the purpose, My Occupy LA Arrest. He provided further details in an eight-part YouTube interview.
Meighan wrote that among other abuses, police confiscated all personal property and destroyed tents including a large, expensive tent his own family had provided for a first aid and wellness center. The mainstream press reported these slashed tents as "garbage".
Meighan said he was one of fifty protesters who encircled a tent with arms interlocked. Police twisted and stomped on protesters' feet to force them to unlink. When Meighan voluntarily unlinked and promised to cooperate, his arms were wrenched behind him and his wrists forced into a painfully unnatural position. His reaction was labeled "resisting". An officer slammed him down and ground his face into the pavement.
Meighan wrote that bail was set at $5000 rather than the usual $150 for an unlawful assembly misdemeanor. Those who could pay found that their payment was not accepted, nor were they allowed to speak to their lawyers. Owing to a unique city law, this was legal.
May Day 2012
Along with unions and Occupy groups from different Southern California areas, Occupy LA participated in May Day 2012 labor parades around LA, converging on the downtown area and holding a general assembly in Pershing Square.
In February 2013, Occupy LA posted messages and images on its Facebook page in support of black LA police officer Chris Dorner, who had become deranged and murdered four other officers. Occupy members did not support Dorner's actions but believed he was killed because of his written exposé of police corruption.
In June 2013, George Zimmerman was acquitted of the 2012 murder of black student Trayvon Martin. Protests flared up in many American cities, and Occupy LA held a parade on July 16. The marchers went from Martin Luther King Boulevard to Leimert Park, and managed to shut down the Santa Monica Freeway for an hour.
On August 25, 2014, the Occupy LA official Facebook page announced that the Occupy LA organization had ceased to exist. However, the blog "Occupy Los Angeles News" is still active as of 2016.
Losing a loved one is painful enough. To lose someone you care deeply about due to an entirely avoidable event is often too much to bear. When this occurs, not only are you forced to endure the grieving process, but you are also left with a myriad of legal questions that need to be answered. It can be daunting to go at this alone, not to mention extremely frustrating. This is when you will want to consider engaging the services of a professional and qualified wrongful death attorney.
What Is Wrongful Death?
It is important to first understand what exactly a wrongful death entails. This is an event that result in the death of an individual due to the fault of either another person or an entity. An entity can be comprised of a number of different companies, such as a care manufacturer or a commercial enterprise. When death can be attributed to such a negligent reason, survivors are often entitled for financial compensation to make up for lost wages, emotional distress due to the demise of a lifelong companion, to pay for funeral expenses, and much more.
Where Do I Turn?
Many people know that their loved one has died due to negligence, but they nave no idea where to turn. There are a number of insurance companies, regulatory agencies, and other entities that often need to become involved in such a lawsuit. Rather than attempt to navigate these waters on your own, consider consulting with a professional wrongful death attorney.
A law firm that specializes in wrongful death cases will typically offer you a free consultation to discuss your case. This is your opportunity to discuss the specific circumstances that resulted in the death of a family member or loved one. Your are able to present this information to your potential lawyer, ask any questions that you might have, and proceed to engage his or her services. The personal injury lawyer is also sure to ask you some questions as well, before proceeding to advise you on the best course of legal action to pursue moving forward.
You might understandably be concerned about the expense associate with mounting a wrongful death lawsuit, particular if a powerful individual or large company is involved. This is precisely why many wrongful death attorneys will offer you their services on a contingency fee basis. This means that the law firm will pay the entire up front expenses associated with mounting your case. You will not pay for anything until the case is settled in your favor. The lawyer would then receive a few based upon the amount of financial compensation that you receive. If for some reason your case is not won, you will not owe anything.
Pedestrian accidents caused by motorized vehicles can result in devastating consequences. People who have been affected by these accidents often face extensive medical treatments, long recovery periods and financial hardships. An accident attorney can always provide sound legal advice to those who wish to seek compensation for their losses.
Pedestrians Laws in California
Under vehicle code section 21950, pedestrians in marked and unmarked crosswalks always have the right of way. Drivers are expected to slow down and take any other necessary precautions to allow pedestrians to cross roads safely. However, pedestrians must still act responsibly and are prohibited from suddenly standing in the way of passing vehicles or blocking traffic for any unnecessary reasons.
Possible Compensable Expenses
Injured pedestrians who wish to file a claim may be eligible to collect monetary compensation to cover:
Statute of Limitation Laws in California
In most cases, anyone who wishes to file a lawsuit in order to collect compensation for losses must do so within two years from the date of the accident. A pedestrian who was injured may still have the right to file a lawsuit after the two-year period if he or she was not mentally capable of submitting the claim or if any unknown injuries related to the accident were later discovered. Anyone under the age of 18 may also be exempt from the statute of limitations.
Determining Who Was at Fault
Only the party who was responsible for the injuries is required to pay for damages in the state of California. In order for drivers to be considered negligent, it must be proven that they exhibited reckless behavior that caused injuries to the pedestrians and/or resulted in property damages. State law makes it possible for pedestrians to recover some compensation even if they were partially to blame for accidents.
